WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS

This is the Western Voice of Audubon for Monday, June 22, 2009

Two YELLOW-BREASTED CHATS were found in different parts of western 
Massachusetts this past week, one in Southwick and another on Mt. 
Greylock.  The Greylock bird was heard singing on Saturday at Jones 
Nose, at the upper end of the fields. From Thursday to at least 
Saturday the Southwick bird was singing in brush next to some of the 
grasslands in the new Southwick Wildlife Management Area.

Also in the grasslands of Southwick were 4 WILLOW FLYCATCHERS, a FISH 
CROW, 6 BROWN THRASHERS, 9 PRAIRIE WARBLERS, 12 FIELD SPARROWS, 2 
GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS, 5 SAVANNAH SPARROWS, and 6 INDIGO BUNTINGS.

Seen elsewhere in Southwick were a BROAD-WINGED HAWK, an AMERICAN 
KESTREL, and 12 PINE SISKINS.

Found on October Mt. in the town of Washington were a BROAD-WINGED 
HAWK, an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, 3 ALDER FLYCATCHERS, 4 WINTER WRENS, 
3 GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, 15 BLACKBURNIAN WARBLERS, 6 MOURNING 
WARBLERS, and 2 CANADA WARBLERS.

In the marsh at Post Farm in Lenox there were 2 COMMON MOORHENS, 2 
VIRGINIA RAILS, and a SORA.

A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO and a SWAINSON'S THRUSH were on Mt. Greylock, 
ORCHARD ORIOLES were seen in Longmeadow and Northampton, 3 COOPER'S 
HAWKS and 2 BARRED OWLS were in Westfield, and an adult PIED-BILLED 
GREBE and four young were seen in Southampton.

In Blandford there were 4 RUFFED GROUSE, a BARRED OWL, an OLIVE-SIDED 
FLYCATCHER, 2 ALDER FLYCATCHERS, 2 WILLOW FLYCATCHERS, a NORTHERN 
WATERTHRUSH, and 2 CANADA WARBLERS.

A survey of the north Quabbin area produced 5 HOODED MERGANSERS, 8 
COMMON MERGANSERS, 10 COMMON LOONS, a BROAD-WINGED HAWK, and 7 PRAIRIE 
WARBLERS.
