WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS
This is the Western Voice of Audubon for Monday, March
8, 2010
The BARNACLE GOOSE was still present all week through
Sunday, though it sometimes is hard to find among the
hundreds of CANADA GEESE on Mill Pond near the center
of South Egremont. Also in the area were a NORTHERN
GOSHAWK, 2 COOPER'S HAWKS, 4 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS and 4
BLACK VULTURES.
Turners Falls continues to host many roosting gulls,
including an ICELAND GULL, 2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS,
and a GLAUCOUS GULL. Also present on Saturday was a
male RED-BREASTED MERGANSER and a MERLIN.
In Hadley there were 2 WOOD DUCKS, a RING-NECKED DUCK,
a KILLDEER, and a NORTHERN SHRIKE, and on Sunday a
GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was seen with the large
flock of geese on North Maple Street.
Three CACKLING GEESE were among a flock of 500 CANADA
GEESE on the Connecticut River near the island between
Agawam and Longmeadow last Tuesday, but the flock was
gone the next day.
At Arcadia Sanctuary in Easthampton and Northampton
there were 4 WOOD DUCKS, a RUDDY DUCK, a NORTHERN
HARRIER, a SAVANNAH SPARROW, a WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW,
and a FOX SPARROW.
In Longmeadow there were 2 MUTE SWANS, an AMERICAN
WIGEON, a NORTHERN PINTAIL, a GREEN-WINGED TEAL, a
RING-NECKED DUCK, and a FISH CROW.
FISH CROWS were also seen in Northampton, Hadley,
Pittsfield, and West Springfield.
A PEREGRINE FALCON was found in Dalton, 4 BLACK
VULTURES in Great Barrington, a BLACK VULTURE in
Pittsfield, a PINE SISKIN at a feeder in Plainfield, 3
RING-NECKED DUCKS in Cheshire, 8 PURPLE FINCHES in
Sheffield, and 2 AMERICAN WOODCOCKS in Lenox.
In Southwick there were 4 WOOD DUCKS, 2 GREEN-WINGED
TEAL, a RING-NECKED DUCK, a GREAT BLUE HERON, and a
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK.
In Belchertown there were a WOOD DUCK, 2 BELTED
KINGFISHERS, 2 WINTER WRENS, and 2 BARRED OWLS.
A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was in Leverett, a YELLOW-BELLIED
SAPSUCKER in Deerfield, and a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER in
Amherst.
