On Dec. 2, 2000 the annual Manitoba Naturalists early December trip to
the Winnipeg
River and Boreal forest was met with cool temperatures (-16C to -5C) and
strong wings which made forest birding a challenge. High water levels
have kept the Winnipeg
River completely open. Nearly 40 species were seen in total.

The bird of the day was a MUTE SWAN seen on the Winnipeg River above the

dam at Powerview. This bird was a first for Manitoba for most of the
group
and a lifer for a few. A late Hooded merganser was nearby.

Two Long-tailed ducks, a Common loon and one first winter herring gull
were seen at Pine Falls.

A single Red-breasted merganser was seen below the dam at Great Falls.

Two Rough-legged haws were seen over fields S. of the River.

On the way home the occupants of one car saw a young Great grey owl on
Stead Road.

Black-backed woodpeckers were seen on Milner Ridge and on the trail off
Maple Creek Road.

Two Brown creepers were on the trail off Maple Creek Road.

Northern shrikes were seen off Maple Creek Road (2) and Highway 11 West
of Great Falls.
