HOTLINE: Baltimore Bird Club Birdline
DATE: 16 Aug 2001
COVERAGE: MD/DC/DE/PA/VA
Compiled by Joe McDaniel (jrmcdaniel@home.com)

The "best" bird for this report is the BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING DUCK
first seen on Tuesday, August 14, on the Anne Arundel side of the
Patuxent River just north of the old railroad crossing. This area can
be seen from land at the Jug Bay Sanctuary. The bird was also seen on
the Anne Arundel side of the river north of the mouth of Mattaponi
Creek. This area can be viewed from Selby's Landing. There are several
possible vantage points from land[DeLorme 38, A-1] For even more
details, go to the MDOsprey archives.

A COMMON NIGHTHAWK was seen flying over a home in Silver Spring, MD --
may be migration time so keep an eye early morning and late evening.

Conowingo Dam and the river below it always is a great spot for shore
birds and Bald Eagles. An addition is a web site reporting water flow
and a webcam so one can do a bit of birding at the monitor. Check out
http://md.water.usgs.gov/rt-cgi/gen_stn_pg?station=01578310&style=new.

Four RUFF were seen at the John Brown Rd. sod farm (actually Central Sod
Farm). Directions: about a mile east on John Brown Rd. from US 301 (just
a few miles north of the 50/301 split). In addition to the Ruff, UPLAND
SANDPIPER and many other shore birds can usually be found there.

A BLACK RAIL was may still be around at the Dulles Greenway Wetlands
Mitigation Project, Loudoun Co, VA. It has been heard from Oatlands Mill
Rd, about .7 mile east of Rte 15, near the gate with the conspicuous "No
Trespassing" sign.
