Of Special Note
Notable sightings this week included LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, several
CANVASBACKS, BLACK VULTURE, SNOWY OWL, and HOARY REDPOLL.
First of the year birds included PIED-BILLED GREBE, NORTHERN SHOVELER,
SNOW GOOSE, RED-SHOULDERED HAWK and FISH CROW.
BARRED OWLS and NORTHERN SHRIKES remain conspicuous in Maine while
BOHEMIAN WAXWING, PINE GROSBEAK and COMMON REDPOLL numbers continue to
dwindle.
York County
Two drake CANVASBACKS were at Perkins Cove in Ogunquit on March 14.
A FOX SPARROW visited a feeder in Saco on March 14.
Two BARROW'S GOLDENEYES continue in the Saco River seen from Water
Street in Saco.
An impressive tally of 116 COMMON MERGANSERS was noted on the Saco River
from the Saco Yacht Club on Front Street.
Scarborough Marsh
Seen behind the Pelreco building on the Pine Point Road this week were
three GADWALL, two AMERICAN WIGEON, and three NORTHERN SHOVELERS on
March 14, a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK on March 16 and 19, plus a number of
AMERICAN WOODCOCKS displaying along the railroad tracks.
Elsewhere in the Pine Point area, an immature SNOW GOOSE, a PIED-BILLED
GREBE and a male NORTHERN HARRIER were seen on March 18 behind the Maine
Audubon Scarborough Marsh Nature Center, while a CAROLINA WREN was at
Dunstan Landing.
Two WOOD DUCKS and a RING-NECKED DUCK were in Jones Creek on March 18.
A YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER continues at the corner of King Street and
Avenue 3, again at Pine Point in Scarborough.
Greater Portland
In Portland, a drake CANVASBACK was seen in Back Cove on March 17.
Another drake CANVASBACK continues in the Fore River at Stroudwater
Crossing on Congress Street as of March 20.
A drake BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was seen at the Cousin's Island Bridge in
Yarmouth on March 15.
First found on March 14, five drakes and one hen CANVASBACK continue to
be seen in the Royal River from the Yarmouth Town Landing.
Seven RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS were seen at the Bradbury Mountain Hawk Watch
in Freeport on March 18, along with 20 TURKEY VULTURES, 13 BALD EAGLES,
and 15 RED-TAILED HAWKS.
A SNOWY OWL passed by the Bradbury Mountain Hawkwatch on March 20.
Seen at Winslow Park in Freeport on March 15 were 300+ GREATER SCAUP, a
RUDDY DUCK, a BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, and five RING-NECKED DUCKS.
A BELTED KINGFISHER was seen at Winslow Park in Freeport on March 14.
Midcoast
Two vocalizing FISH CROWS were at the corner of Pleasant and Maine
Street in Brunswick on March 17.
A PEREGRINE FALCON continues atop the Fort Andros Mill in Brunswick.
Seen among the Mallards on the Androscoggin River in Topsham were a
NORTHERN PINTAIL on March 14 and a WOOD DUCK on March 20.
A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen in Richmond on March 15.
The BLACK VULTURE was again seen at Mainely Poultry turkey farm on Route
1 in Warren on March 14 and March 20.
Also in Warren, a drake NORTHERN PINTAIL and several BARROW'S GOLDENEYE
remain in the river near the village bridge.
Ten RAZORBILLS were seen from the Vinalhaven Ferry on March 16.
Kennebec Valley (Augusta-Waterville)
Twenty-five RING-NECKED DUCKS were seen on the Cobbosseecontee Stream in
Gardiner on March 14.
A NORTHERN FLICKER was seen at Eight Rod Road in Augusta on March 16.
Two HOARY REDPOLLS continued as of March 14 at feeders in Benton.
Central - Bangor
One male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was feeding on the Penobscot River in Bangor
upstream from the site of the former Bangor dam.
Penobscot Bay
Birds on Vinalhaven this past week included three BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, a
RING-NECKED DUCK, and a COMMON MERGANSER on Carver's Pond.
Also on Vinalhaven, NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS continue to be heard at the
Poor Farm and the Williams Preserve.
Downeast
Two PEREGRINE FALCONS are being seen at Sand Beach, near a known nest
sight, in Acadia National Park.
A male and female GADWALL along with a breeding pair of NORTHERN PINTAIL
were located on March 12, in Carrying Place Cove in Eastport, near the
city's public picnic area.
A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen on March 17 at Prince's Cove in
Eastport.
A PIED-BILLED GREBE was seen in the cove of the ferry landing at Swans
Island.
Western Mountains
The two GRAYS JAYS observed on March 15 at the transfer station on Loon
Lake Road north of Rangeley are said to be part of a group of up to
eight that regularly visit the site.
Several BOREAL CHICKADEES were with many Black-capped Chickadees
observed on Summer Road off of Loon Lake Road in Rangeley on March 15.
Five RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were seen in Kingfield on March 18.
Northern Maine
Bird numbers were thin in the Nesowadnahunk area of Baxter State Park
this weekend with a few BOREAL CHICKADEES and GRAY JAYS seen.
