Of Special Note
Headlining this week's report are: the rediscovery of the BARNACLE
GOOSE, CACKLING GOOSE and GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE in North Yarmouth,
a PACIFIC LOON in Belfast, SNOWY OWLS in Bath and Vinalhaven, and a
VARIED THRUSH in Deer Isle.
Other noteworthy finds include: SNOW GOOSE, HARLEQUIN DUCK, BARROW'S
GOLDENEYE, RUDDY DUCK, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, PEREGRINE FALCON, AMERICAN
COOT, AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, RUDDY TURNSTONE, PURPLE SANDPIPER, ICELAND
GULL, GLAUCOUS GULL, NORTHERN SHRIKE, GRAY CATBIRD, ORANGE-CROWNED
WARBLER, NASHVILLE WARBLER, BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER, LAPLAND
LONGSPUR, BOBOLINK, BALTIMORE ORIOLE, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL, COMMON
REDPOLL, and EVENING GROSBEAK.
The movement of RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS and PINE SISKINS has slowed but
is still conspicuous.

York County
Birds at Seapoint Beach in Kittery on November 15 included 100 to150
HORNED LARKS, a LAPLAND LONGSPUR, an AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, two RUDDY
TURNSTONES, 25 AMERICAN PIPITS, and a tardy BOBOLINK.
A female BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER visited a yard in Cape Porpoise in
Kennebunkport on November 16. Also in Kennebunkport on November 16 were
at least 100 NORTHERN GANNETS observed from Ocean Avenue and a PEREGRINE
FALCON.
A lone male HARLEQUIN DUCK and 75 PURPLE SANDPIPERS were seen from Ocean
Avenue in Biddeford Pool on November 17.
Lingering songbirds in Saco discovered on the 15th were a GRAY CATBIRD,
an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, a NASHVILLE WARBLER, and a BALTIMORE ORIOLE.
Greater Portland
A BALTIMORE ORIOLE has been visiting a fruiting tree at the south end of
Chadwick Street in the West End of Portland.
A BARNACLE GOOSE, a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, a CACKLING GOOSE, and a
SNOW GOOSE were again found on November 19 at Thornhurst Farm on Route
115 in North Yarmouth. The BARNACLE GOOSE was close to Prince Well
Road, off Rt. 115, in the afternoon on November 20.
An adult NORTHERN SHRIKE was spotted on November 17 along Route 9 in
Durham.
Lewiston-Auburn
Waterfowl on Sabattus Pond in Sabattus on November 18 included 141 RUDDY
DUCKS, 14 AMERICAN COOTS, and 12 BLACK SCOTERS.
A BLACK SCOTER and a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER were sheltering on Lake Auburn
on November 18.
Midcoast
An adult PEREGRINE FALCON continues at the Andros Mill in Brunswick.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was at Wharton Point in Brunswick through November 17
and a drake BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was present on November 16.
A SNOWY OWL was successfully extricated from a building at Bath
Ironworks.
Late migrants coming to feeders in the Midcoast area included a RED-EYED
VIREO in a Brunswick yard on November 17 and a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER
in Phippsburg on November 19.
A flock of 40 to 50 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS was at Totman Cove in
Phippsburg on November 18. Another 20 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were
tallied in the West Point area of Phippsburg on the 20th.
Kennebec River Valley (Augusta-Waterville)
LAPLAND LONGSPURS are being seen at the Flood Farm and other fields in
Clinton this week. A MERLIN has been frequenting the Flood Farm also
which is on the east side of River Road near the Benton / Clinton town
line.
A flock of ~40 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS was flying in and out of some
pines on an island in Horseshoe Pond at the Litchfield / West Gardiner
town line as viewed from the Dennis Hill Road bridge.
Penobscot Bay
A PACIFIC LOON was seen in Belfast Bay on November 18.
A VARIED THRUSH was seen on November 18 at Scott's Landing on Deer Isle.
Efforts to relocate the bird have so far been unsuccessful.
A SNOWY OWL was spotted hunting on Sheep Island in Vinalhaven on
November 14.
An impressive tally of over 100 RED-NECKED GREBES was noted from Ash
Point on Owls Head the morning of November 20.
An immature NORTHERN SHRIKE was on Deer Isle on November 15.
A pair of CAROLINA WRENS continues in a yard in Camden.
Downeast
A LAPLAND LONGSPUR was flitting along the ground of the College of the
Atlantic Campus on November 15.
The incursion of RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS north and east was marked by a
Red-bellied Woodpecker in Town Hill on Mount Desert Island and another
at a feeder in Dennysville in Washington County, both on November 15.
An immature GLAUCOUS GULL was on Bar Road in South Lubec on November 16.
A southerly wind brought a dozen BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES to West Quoddy
Head on November 16.
Northern Maine
Flocks of EVENING GROSBEAKS and COMMON REDPOLLS have begun moving into
Aroostook County.
NORTHERN SHRIKES were seen in Patten and Caribou.
Two ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were flying together in Presque Isle on November
17.
Six ICELAND GULLS were in Littleton.
