Of Special Note
Birds of note this week include EARED GREBE, WHITE-FACED IBIS, RED-BILLED
TROPICBIRD, AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER, CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, RED CROSSBILL
and LARK BUNTING.

York County
The EARED GREBE and at least one RUDDY DUCK at the Sanford Sewerage District
ponds continued through at least June 7.
An immature male LARK BUNTING was discovered on June 9 and continued at least
through June 11, visiting a feeder at 179 Beach Ave. in Kennebunk. The best
viewing is from the street with a scope. Park in the designated parking places
on the ocean side in front of 179 Beach Ave and view the feeders on the right
side of the house. Please respect the private property of the owner's and their
neighbor's.
A WHITE-FACED IBIS was found on June 9 and continued to be seen at least through
June 11 at the Westbrook Skating Pond on Pool Road in Biddeford.
A pair of EVENING GROSBEAKS visited a feeder in Wells on June 6.
Greater Portland
Pine Point in Scarborough hosted eight BRANT and one AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER on
June 10.
Four RED KNOTS were observed at Pine Point in Scarborough on June 7.
Kennebec River Valley (Augusta-Waterville)
An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was at the Arboretum and a MOURNING WARBLER was behind
the cemetery next to the airport in Augusta on June 10.
Central Maine
A COMMON NIGHTHAWK adult was fly-catching over the second pond at the Taylor
Road bait ponds in Orono on June 6 while juveniles were heard calling from the
woods behind the far side of the pond.
Downeast
Bar Harbor Whale Watch Company Puffin & Whale trips found a SOOTY SHEARWATER,
4-5 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS, two NORTHERN FULMARS, and five NORTHERN GANNETS on
June 8 and a NORTHERN FULMAR and 12 GREATER SHEARWATERS on June 9.
Numerous ATLANTIC PUFFINS, RAZORBILLS, COMMON MURRES, BLACK GUILLEMOTS, LAUGHING
GULLS, ARCTIC, COMMON, and ROSEATE TERNS were at Petit Manan.
A SPRUCE GROUSE, two BOREAL CHICKADEES, seven SWAINSON'S THRUSHES,
YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHERS, and 10 species of warblers were seen on the Burn
Road in Topsfield on June 6.
Birds in Brookton on June 8 included 18 species of warblers, six CLIFF SWALLOWS
on Forest Road, two GRAY JAYS and two RED CROSSBILLS in the Hackmatack Bog, and
a BOREAL CHICKADEE just west of the village of Brookton.
Western Mountains
Bird seen hiking from Grafton Notch to West Baldpate included a BLACK-BACKED
WOODPECKER, 2 GRAY JAYS, 2 BOREAL CHICKADEES, and 11 species of warblers.
A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was seen on Tumbledown Mountain in Gilead.
Highlights in the Oquossoc/Rangeley area on June 6 included a SPRUCE GROUSE
along the Boy Scout Road and three CAPE MAY WARBLERS, one singing in Rangeley
and a pair just south of Cupsuptic.
An AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER was discovered in a large stand of dead
spruce/fir where Grant Brook crosses the Golden Road in T1 R9 Wels on June 9.
Other birds seen in Baxter State Park on June 9 included a RED CROSSBILL flying
over, a RUSTY BLACKBIRD at Sandy Stream Pond, and 18 species of warblers.
Northern Maine
A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was discovered in a brushy field located just to the west
of the new wind turbine at the University of Maine in Presque Isle. Visitors
should park in the lot by the tennis courts on the southwest side of campus and
walk across the athletic fields towards the turbine. Stay on the mowed paths.
The bird was singing on June 11 from some clumps of shrubby willow about 150-200
yards immediately west of the windmill.
A second pair of nesting MERLINS was located in Presque Isle.
A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was seen in Portage Lake.
An AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER was seen near Martin Pond in Caswell on June
6.
A COMMON NIGHTHAWK was spotted over a clear-cut in western-most Caswell this
week flying and doing its booming display in the middle of the day.
A RUSTY BLACKBIRD was seen carrying food across a recently flooded clear-cut off
the McLean Brook Road in Sinclair.
Gulf of Maine
The RED-BILLED TROPICBIRD was seen on June 11 from the Maine State Ferry south
of Monroe Island on the way to Matinicus Island, plunging for food and being
chased by terns.
