Of Special Note
Top birds this week are: KING EIDER, THAYER'S GULL, DOVEKIE, NORTHERN HAWK OWL,
YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER, and PAINTED BUNTING.
Some of the other standouts in the report this week are: SNOW GOOSE, BRANT,
BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, RUDDY DUCK, NORTHERN GOSHAWK, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, KILLDEER,
RUDDY TURNSTONE, BLACK-HEADED GULL, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, BLACK-LEGGED
KITTIWAKE, THICK-BILLED MURRE, RAZORBILL, BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER, NORTHERN
SHRIKE, GRAY JAY, BOHEMIAN WAXWING, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, and RUSTY BLACKBIRD.

York County
Four BRANT were at Fort Foster in Kittery on January 26.
A drake KING EIDER, 18 THICK-BILLED MURRES, and 17+ RAZORBILLS were seen from
The Cliff House in Ogunquit on January 26.
Two DOVEKIES and two BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES were spotted from Marginal Way at
Perkins Cove in Ogunquit on January 26. A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was also at this
site back on the 24th.
An adult SNOW GOOSE and a hen NORTHERN PINTAIL were in the Webhannet Marsh in
Wells on January 26.
Two RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS were in a West Kennebunk yard on January 24.
An immature male BALTIMORE ORIOLE continues at the corner of Boulder Drive and
Route 35 in Kennebunk.
An adult SNOW GOOSE continues in the marsh at Biddeford Pool.
Ten RUDDY TURNSTONES and 61 RAZORBILLS were at East Point Sanctuary in Biddeford
on January 24. A dark morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK continues on Wood Island as seen
from the East Point Sanctuary.
Greater Portland
The Falmouth YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER is hanging in there. It makes almost daily
visits to the feeders at 51 Carroll Street. Near sunrise remains the best time
to look for it. Please view the feeders to the right of the house from the road
only.
Up to three LAPLAND LONGSPURS were reported with HORNED LARKS at Kettle Cove in
Cape Elizabeth last weekend. BRANT are present inconsistently at this location
as well.
A KILLDEER was discovered on January 24 at Stroudwater Crossing in Portland.
A NORTHERN FLICKER was seen at Fore River Sanctuary in Portland on January 24.
Best viewed from the Fish Pier or Union Wharf in the Old Port, an adult GLAUCOUS
GULL and several ICELAND GULLS are wintering in Portland Harbor. Two more
GLAUCOUS GULLS were seen from the Fisherman's Co-op at Pine Point in
Scarborough.
Kennebec River Valley (Augusta-Waterville)
Hatch Hill Landfill in Augusta remains a hotspot for Bald Eagles and gulls.
Head east from downtown on Route 105 and it is on the left after several miles.
In addition to as many as seven ICELAND GULLS and five GLAUCOUS GULLS, a
compelling argument can be made for one first winter bird being a THAYER'S GULL.
Gull numbers and activity fluctuate at this site which is closed on Sundays
and Mondays.
Midcoast
On the 24th, a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER and a HERMIT THRUSH were found off West
Shore Road on Westport Island.
A RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET was seen in Topsham on January 28.
In addition to several ICELAND and GLAUCOUS GULLS, three LESSER BLACK-BACKED
GULLS were seen on ice floes on the Kennebec River in Bath on January 24.
On January 24th, a NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen on the North Newcastle Road in
Newcastle.
A COMMON GRACKLE is visiting a feeder in Bremen.
A NORTHERN FLICKER was along Route 220 in Waldoboro on January 26.
An ICELAND GULL was at Pemaquid Point on the 26th.
Penobscot Bay
An adult and an immature BLACK-HEADED GULL, as well as several ICELAND GULLS,
continue in Owls Head Harbor through at least the 24th.
At least twelve BARROW'S GOLDENEYES were in Belfast Harbor on January 23.
Approximately 100 RUDDY DUCKS are being seen in Stockton Harbor from the Sear's
Island Causeway and Cape Jellison, with another dozen reported in Fort Point
Cove from Cape Jellison on January 27.
On January 28th, a NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen near Deer Isle High School.
Central Maine
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen in Herman on January 23.
Two NORTHERN SHRIKES were in Bangor on January 23.
On January 26, a WINTER WREN was discovered on the banks of the Kenduskeag
Stream where Valley Avenue and Kenduskeag Stream come together in Bangor.
A BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER and three GRAY JAYS were spotted on Stud Mill Road in
Orrington on January 23.
Downeast
A male PAINTED BUNTING is still visiting a private feeder in Blue Hill.
An immature NORTHERN SHRIKE was in Southwest Harbor on January 24.
Up to 50 BALD EAGLES were congregated at Quoddy Head on January 24.
Two female BARROW'S GOLDENEYES were in the East Machias River on January 24.
Western Mountains
Four separate flocks of HORNED LARKS, totally 80 birds, were on the grass
shoulders of the Old River Road in Fryeburg Harbor on January 22.
Six BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were along Route 113 in Stow on January 26.
A GRAY JAY was seen near the summit of Old Speck in Grafton on January 24.
On January 28, three RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were found at Fryeburg Harbor.
Northern Maine
The Blaine NORTHERN HAWK OWL continues, seen on January 26 on Pierce Road near
the intersection with the Old Houlton Road.
