Of Special Note
Top birds this week are: PACIFIC LOON, NORTHERN HAWK OWL, SNOWY OWL,
YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER, and PAINTED BUNTING.
Other noteworthy species included: ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, NORTHERN HARRIER, AMERICAN
KESTREL, BLACK-HEADED GULL, NORTHERN SHRIKE, BOHEMIAN WAXWING, WHITE-WINGED
CROSSBILL, and EVENING GROSBEAK.
GREAT HORNED OWLS have begun calling in many parts of the state. ICELAND GULLS
were reported in a number of coastal locations.
Greater Portland
A YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER is still coming to the feeders at 51 Carroll Street in
Falmouth. It was seen as recently as the 17th and sunrise is still your best
bet.
A NORTHERN HARRIER cruised over Scarborough Marsh WMA along Manson Libby Road in
the Scarborough Industrial Park on February 18.
A kayaking birder came across a PACIFIC LOON on the east side of Richmond Island
off Cape Elizabeth on February 13.
BRANT continue to turn up irregularly at Kettle Cove in Cape Elizabeth.
A RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD visited a feeder in Scarborough.
Two NORTHERN FLICKERS were at Wainwright Recreational Complex in South Portland.
A hen NORTHERN PINTAIL was seen again in Back Cove in Portland.
A LESSER SCAUP was seen near the state pier on Little Diamond Island on February
18.
Midcoast
A male AMERICAN KESTREL was spotted on East Pond Road in Nobleboro on February
16.
Penobscot Bay
Two BLACK-HEADED GULLS continue at the lobster pound in Owl's Head Harbor. An
AMERICAN WIGEON is occasionally seen in this area as well.
Sightings from St.George this week included a hen WOOD DUCK was at Ripley's Cove
on Route 73 in Tenants Harbor and a light morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK hunting over
the small grassy islands just off Marshall Point in Port Clyde.
An immature RED-SHOULDERED HAWK continues to be seen in the Clam Cove area
between Rockland and Rockport.
Central Maine
A flock of 160 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS was at Fields Pond Audubon Center in Holden on
February 18.
Downeast
A male PAINTED BUNTING continues at private feeders in Blue Hill.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen on Blue Heritage Trust's Wardwell Pasture Preserve in
Blue Hill on February 15.
A drake and a hen NORTHERN PINTAIL were seen on several days this week in
Northeast Harbor.
A CAROLINA WREN was singing in Seal Harbor on February 13.
A flock of 16 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were at Jordan Pond in Acadia National Park on
Mount Desert Island on February 13.
A SNOWY OWL was reported on February 16 sitting on the sand bar off Bridge
Street in Bar Harbor.
A GLAUCOUS GULL was at Prospect Harbor on February 16.
Northern Maine
A NORTHERN HAWK OWL continues on Pierce Road near the intersection with Old
Houlton Road in Blaine. Afternoon appears to be the best time for this bird.
Birds on Muscovic Road in New Sweden on February 18 included a BLACK-BACKED
WOODPECKER, three BOREAL CHICKADEES and three WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS.
Visiting a feed in Stockholm on February 18 were 12 EVENING GROSBEAKS, two GRAY
JAYS, two PINE SISKINS and unusual for the area, a WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH.
A belated report - a VARIED THRUSH was photographed during its two week stay at
a feeding station in Fort Kent back in December.
