Of Special Note
Top birds this week are: BLACK-HEADED GULL, NORTHERN HAWK OWL, YELLOW-THROATED
WARBLER, and PAINTED BUNTING.
Some other noteworthy species mentioned are: SNOW GOOSE, BARROW'S GOLDENEYE,
TURKEY VULTURE, BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE, DOVEKIE, RAZORBILL, NORTHERN SAW-WHET
OWL, LONG-EARED OWL, NORTHERN SHRIKE, BOREAL CHICKADEE, RUSTY BLACKBIRD, and
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL.
York County
A drake NORTHERN PINTAIL was in Cape Neddick Harbor on February 20.
A wintering PINE WARBLER was singing in Wells on February 20.
Two BRANT were seen at Vines Landing in Biddeford Pool on February 21.
A drake NORTHERN PINTAIL was seen on the Saco River from Water Street in Saco on
February 21.
A BARROW'S GOLDENEYE and a pair of PEREGRINE FALCONS continue to be seen around
Factory Island on the Saco River in Saco.
A SNOW GOOSE was seen at the Mustang Rescue Farm on West Street, near the
intersection with Route 9, in Biddeford on February 21.
AMERICAN PIPITS flew over the fields of Laudholm Farm at the Wells Reserve on
the 26th.
Greater Portland
An early RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD visited feeders in Cape Elizabeth on February 23.
A YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER is still coming to the feeders at 51 Carroll Street in
Falmouth.
On February 22, three TURKEY VULTURES were soaring over West Falmouth.
As many as 25 BRANT have been seen recently at Kettle Cove in Cape Elizabeth.
RAZORBILLS flew by Dyer Point in Cape Elizabeth on a number of occasions this
week and the big storm brought some BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES and NORTHERN GANNETS
inshore on the 26th.
A DOVEKIE was on the water at Two Lights State Park in Cape Elizabeth in the
26th.
Kennebec River Valley (Augusta-Waterville)
Three RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were in an orchard along Route 126 (Hunts Meadow Road) in
Whitefield on February 21.
A TURKEY VULTURE was soaring over the Pine Tree State Arboretum in Augusta on
the 22nd.
Midcoast
Birders should be on the lookout for an intriguing gull on the Kennebec River in
the Bath/Woolwich area. On February 21, from Days Ferry Landing along Rt. 128,
a gull best described as either a hybrid HERRING x LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL or
possibly YELLOW-LEGGED GULL was observed.
Back on the 19th, a NORTHERN HAWK OWL was seen by a driving birder perched at
the tip of a spruce next to Route 1 in Woolwich. The bird has not been
relocated.
A BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was in the river by the New Meadows Marina on Bath Road in
Bath on February 21.
Three GLAUCOUS GULLS were seen in Bath on February 24.
Two BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS were spotted along Rt. 194 in Newcastle on February
23.
A WINTER WREN was singing in Friendship on the 26th.
On February 26, three BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES and an ICELAND GULL flew by
Pemaquid Point in Bristol.
Penobscot Bay
Two BLACK-HEADED GULLS continue at the lobster pound in Owl's Head Harbor.
Recent Vinalhaven Island sightings have included NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL,
LONG-EARED OWL, 150+ WHITE WINGED CROSSBILLS, 12 COMMON GRACKLES, and a
RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD.
Downeast
A male PAINTED BUNTING continues at private feeders in Blue Hill.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was at the golf course on Fernald Point in Southwest Harbor on
Mount Desert Island on February 21.
4 ICELAND GULLS were present at the Stinson sardine cannery in Prospect Harbor
on the 21st.
Western Mountains
Birds spotted along Route 26 in Grafton Notch on February 21 included four
BOREAL CHICKADEES, eight PINE SISKINS, and a NORTHERN SHRIKE.
Northern Maine
A NORTHERN HAWK OWL continues on Pierce Road near the intersection with Old
Houlton Road in Blaine.
