Of Special Note
Top birds this week are: PACIFIC LOON, BLACK-HEADED GULL, and PAINTED BUNTING.
Other standouts mentioned include: SNOW GOOSE, BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, SPRUCE
GROUSE, BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE, RAZORBILL, NORTHERN SHRIKE, BOHEMIAN WAXWING,
RUSTY BLACKBIRD, RED CROSSBILL, and EVENING GROSBEAK.
Arriving TURKEY VULTURES have made it as far north as Hampden. A few RED-WINGED
BLACKBIRDS and COMMON GRACKLES have begun to trickle back into southern and
mid-coast Maine.
Greater Portland
Likely a result of the big storm, an exceptionally early OSPREY was spotted from
Fowler Road in Cape Elizabeth on February 28.
Several BRANT continue at Kettle Cove in Cape Elizabeth.
The YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER in Falmouth has not been seen since February 25.
A SNOW GOOSE was among the many Canada Geese in the fields at 293 Woodville Road
in Falmouth on March 3.
Kennebec River Valley (Augusta-Waterville)
A flock of 25 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen along Route 225 in Rome on March 1.
Midcoast
On February 28, an adult BLACK-HEADED GULL was seen in the parking lot for the
public boat access and at the nearby sewage treatment facility just north of
downtown Bath. This area is reached by taking Front Street away from downtown
to a right turn on Town Landing Road. The Black-headed Gull was still present
through at least March 5.
Back on 26th, a PACIFIC LOON was seen between Hermit and Wood Islands in
Phippsburg.
An early or lingering DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT was seen from King Phillips Road
in East Boothbay on February 28.
Two RAZORBILLS were off Ocean Point in East Boothbay on February 28.
Penobscot Bay
A PAINTED BUNTING continues in a private yard in Blue Hill.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was at Weskeag Marsh in South Thomaston on February 28.
BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES were seen from Owl's Head State Park and the Rockland
Breakwater on February 28.
The two BLACK-HEADED GULLS wintering at Owl's Head Harbor were not been reported
this week.
Downeast
Sightings on Mount Desert Island on February 27 included a RUSTY BLACKBIRD near
the KOA campground and a NORTHERN GANNET and a BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE from Sand
Beach in Acadia National Park. On March 5, a BARROW'S GOLDENEYE flew in at
Hadley Point.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was hunting a blueberry barren on Station Road in Centerville
on March 3.
Two BARROW'S GOLDENEYES were seen at the Willow Street Bridge in East Machias on
March 3.
Western Mountains
On February 28, a SPRUCE GROUSE and RED CROSSBILLS were found off Route 16 in
Adamstown Township, east of Wilsons Mills.
At least 30 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen by the fairgrounds in Fryeburg on March
3.
Four EVENING GROSBEAKS visited a feeder in Rangeley on February 28.
A flock of 60 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS was in downtown Rangeley on March 4.
Northern Maine
EVENING GROSBEAKS were in Castle Hill.
