Name: Maine Audubon Rare Bird Alert
Reporting Period: July 24-26, 2010
Area: State of Maine
Compiler: Eric Hynes
Of Special Note
Five BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCKS showed up in Sanford on July 24.
Gulf of Maine
The ferry out to Monhegan Island on July 24 produced individuals of all four
regularly-occurring shearwater species (CORY'S, GREATER, SOOTY, and MANX) in the
Gulf of Maine.
York County
Five flighty and unmarked BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCKS were observed at the
Sanford Sewerage District (at the end of Gavel Road, off of Route 4 in Sanford)
on July 24. Despite efforts, they have not been relocated on July 25 and 26.
If accepted by the records committee, this sighting would represent the first
record for the species in the state of Maine. COMMON MOORHENS and a RUDDY DUCK
continue at this location as well. The EARED GREBE was not seen on July 26.
An unconfirmed report was received of three ROYAL TERNS at the mouth of the
Kennebunk River in Kennebunkport on July 24.
Noteworthy for the location and date, a SANDHILL CRANE was flying south over
Kittery on July 24.
Greater Portland
A WILSON'S PHALAROPE and a couple NORTHERN PINTAILS were the more unusual birds
found out in the salt pannes of Scarborough Marsh from the Eastern Road Trail on
July 25.
Western Mountains
Back on July 23, GRAY JAYS, BOREAL CHICKADEES, and YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHERS
were found during a hike up East Kennebago Mountain.
On July 24, a SPRUCE GROUSE, an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, eight GRAY JAYS, and
nine BOREAL CHICKADEES were found along the Boy Scout Road, off Route 16, in
Oquossoc.
