Of Special Note
A ROYAL TERN was roosting last Friday in Phippsburg.
The RED-BILLED TROPICBIRD is still being seen out on Seal Island NWR.
A WHITE-WINGED DOVE showed up on MDI on Saturday.
Shorebird migration continues to be the dominate theme in birding these days in
Maine. Post-breeding dispersal of wading birds has been noted at a number of
inland locations also.
Gulf of Maine
As of July 28, the RED-BILLED TROPICBIRD was still frequenting Seal Island.
Reports over the weekend from Monhegan Island included an AMERICAN
GOLDEN-PLOVER, a WHITE-EYED VIREO, and a RED CROSSBILL.
All four shearwater species (CORY'S, GREAT, SOOTY, and MANX) and hundreds of
WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS were found approximately 30 miles southeast of Casco Bay
on August 1.
York County
Once again, four out-of-season BRANT were seen at the mouth of the Mousam River
in Kennebunk. Last Friday was the most recent report.
Midcoast
Last Friday (July 30), a ROYAL TERN was roosting among the many birds on the
sand island created by the mouth of the Morse River at Popham Beach State Park
in Phippsburg.
Both a PEREGRINE FALCON and an unidentified JAEGER spent the weekend hunting
around the seabird colony on Eastern Egg Rock. A RED KNOT was on the island
also.
Central
The post-breeding dispersal of GREAT EGRETS up the Penobscot River Valley was
noted from several locations over the weekend. Lincoln was the northernmost
report.
Downeast
A WHITE-WINGED DOVE came into feeders in a private yard on the northwest side of
Mount Desert Island on July 31.
On Saturday (July 31), in the passage between West Quoddy Head in Lubec, Maine
and Campobello Island, New Brunswick, there was an impressive concentration of
marine mammals and seabirds. Most notable were the 25 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES
and 1,500 BONAPARTE'S GULLS.
Northern
A SPRUCE GROUSE was encountered in Pittston Farm, northwest of Moosehead Lake,
on July 30.
