This is the rare bird alert sponsored by the Detroit Audubon Society. Myles
Willard found a Rock Wren on October 20th at the observation tower at the end of
Kitchen Road at Nayanquing Point in Bay County. He first saw the bird right
at the tower. Later he saw and photographed the bird sitting on a rock pile a
short distance from the tower on the dike heading east from the tower. On
Sunday October 19th Mark Hubinger had Northern Shrike and Snow Buntings at
Nayanquing Point plus shorebirds including a Golden Plover. In Huron County,
Robert Epstein found two Snow Buntings on the Lake Huron shoreline in Sand Beach
twp. Also on October 19th. Three Tundra Swans were off Grindstone City on
October 19th which is slightly early for the species. In Sanilac County, Steve
Santner and Karl Overman found a Baird's Sandpiper at the Croswell sewage
lagoon on October 19th.

There was a good diversity of raptors at the hawk watch at Lake Erie Metro Park
on October 19th highlighted by two Swainson's Hawks. Other raptors that day
included 3 Goshawks, 47 Red-shouldered Hawks and two Rough-legged Hawks. Julie
Craves reports banding six Purple Finches on October 20th, further evidence of a
better than average incursion of this species this year south of its breeding
range. On October 16th Karl Overman found 7 Ovenbirds at a townhouse complex at
Rivard and E. Lafayette Street in the downtown Detroit area. That is a species
that has a habit of lingering late in the fall in urban areas.

A Glossy Ibis was found at Wheatley Harbor, Ontario on October 18th.

At Whitefish Point recent highlights included a White-eyed Vireo on October 19th
and a Harlequin Duck on October 18th. Common Redpolls are back at Whitefish.
