This is the rare bird alert sponsored by the Detroit Audubon Society. The west
side of the state has been excellent for waterfowl this past week. Skye Haas
had two Ross's Geese at the Muskegon sewage lagoons on November 19th and on the
same date he had 18 Snow Geese at Allegan State Game Area. A great waterfowl
flock off Douglas in Allegan County has had several Harlequin Ducks, all three
scoters, and Long-tailed Duck during the past week. Birders such as Kip Miller
and Allen Chartier had had female Harlequin Ducks off Oval Beach as well on Lake
Michigan. In Berrien County the White-fronted Goose at Lake Michigan College
was seen at least as of November 17th.
Late passerine reports include a female Summer Tanager still present today in
southern Manistee County at the home of Paula Zenker (231.882.5651); a Green
Heron in Dearborn by Dorothy McLeer on November 19th; an Orange-crowned Warbler
today in Dearborn by Julie Craves.
Per usual Washtenaw County birders have been active and turning up notable
birds. Mike Sefton and Jacco Gelderloos had Glaucous Gull and Lesser
Black-backed Gull on November 15th at the Salem Township landfill in Washtenaw
County. Don Chalfant had 2 Surf Scoters on Independence Lake today. A
Baltimore Oriole was seen again at the home of Rod Bentz in Ann Arbor on
November 17th.
The Townsend's Solitaire was still being seen in the DeLaurier area of Point
Pelee as of November 16th.
Steve Santner had two Black Scoters off Belle Isle in Detroit on November 15th.
My quirky downtown birding continues though with less and less to see. The
Ovenbird, present for over two weeks, was still in the hedge at the MGM Grand
Casino as of November 16th. An Eastern Towhee is still at Hart Plaza as of
today and a Lincoln's Sparrow is still in Grand Circus Park on Woodward Avenue
as of today.
On Saturday, November 22nd there will be a field trip to Belle Isle in Detroit
lead by Steve Santner meet at the Nature Center parking lot at the east end of
Belle Isle at 9 am.
