Welcome to the latest edition of the Mississippi Coast Birding News and Hotline.
Birders at the Waveland Lagoon have reported a female Anhinga along with several
immature White Ibis. The Waveland Lagoon has long been a favorite spot for
shorebirds, ducks, migrating warblers and flyover raptors.
Last weeks survey of the Seaman Rd. Lagoons provided some birders with a taste
of spring as Purple Martins flew over the north cells and pollen from the pines
settled on the hoods of the cars parked nearby. Concentrations of duck species
and shorebirds this time of year at this location is almost overwealming. Among
the most prevalent were Blue-winged Teal and Northern Shovelers. An immature
Bald Eagle soared overhead on wings held evenly on the horizontal plane. A most
cooperative Virginia Rail was seen and there were many Palm Warblers present.
One American Pipit was seen walking along the waters edge at the front cell.
A very cooperative Western Tanager is still being seen in a yard near Ocean
Springs. I have reports that the bird has become somewhat skittish due to both
a Sharp-shinned Hawk and a Coopers Hawk patroling the feeders.
Gerry Morgan reports several Rufous Hummingbirds that are still visiting her
backyard feeders near Gulfport.
That's it for this edition of the Mississippi Coast Birding News and Hotline.
