This is Terry Toppins with the Montana Birding Hotline sponsored by Five
Valleys
Audubon Society recorded late Thursday June 28th, 2007.
Fritz Prellwitz reported a SNOWY EGRET and a CASPIAN TERN at the northern tip
of Nelson Reservoir just east of Malta today June 28th.
George Mowat reports that a LESSER GOLDFINCH was seen today at the Rehberg
Ranch Subdivision where they were found last year. On the rims north of
Billings go
west of the airport on Hiway 3 and turn north on Rod and Gun Club Road, go
1/2 mile
and turn west onto Iron Horse Trail, go 4 tenths of a mile and park on the
right at a
small log building and go down the trail at the entrance to the parking lot.
It was
seen in a Pine Tree today.
Richard Mousel says a second LESSER GOLDFINCH has been reported from
Fort Benton today the 28th.
Wednesday June 27th Jean Olson and her daughter Jeanie found a pair of BLUE
GROSBEAKS at the pond in Warren. They also saw a female BLUE GROSBEAK
on the road to the Pryors just before it rises steeply towards Red Dome.
Richard Mousel had a ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK visit his yard in Great Falls
on June 27th.
June 26th Pete Smith was in Glacier National Park and rode his bicycle up
the North
Fork Road and found an ALDER FLYCATCHER 2.5 miles north of the Fish Creek
Campground about 50 yards east of the road. He then found a BOREAL CHICKADEE
on a snag on the east side of the road 3.54 miles north of the Fish Creek
Campground.
Dan Casey had two great finds. The evening of June 18th he found a breeding
plumaged
RED PHALAROPE on Farm Road Slough northeast of Somers. Farm Road is north
of
Highway 82 between Somers and Big Fork and as you head north there is only
one
wetland. The next morning he found a SNOWY PLOVER. The last report for the
phalarope I have was on June 20th and the plover was last reported June 21
BLACK-BILLED CUCKOOS have been reported from several locations. Gary Swant
and Nate Kohler on June 25th found one at the Wolf Point River Bridge and
then
found a pair south of the Culbertson River Bridge both on the Missouri
River.
Garrett MacDonald has been doing
point counts for the Forest Service and found a single BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO
in
the Ekalaka Hills near Ekalaka on June 14th and then found two more 12 miles
south
of Glendive in a dense Juniper woodland.
June 17th Bob Rost reported a pair of PURPLE FINCHES at his home northeast
of
Ronan.
Wayne Tree and Bob Danley had a spectacular find of a LEAST TERN at Lee
Metcalf
NWR near Stevensville on June 10th. It was not subsequently relocated.
If you have sightings you would like to share or need more information,
please leave
a message or call Carole or Terry at 549-6027. Thanks and good birding to
you.
