This is Terry Toppins with the Montana Birding Hotline sponsored by Five
Valleys
Audubon Society recorded late Monday January 7, 2008.

A New Year, New Beginning.

Sleeman's Island at Fort Missoula in Missoula has been hopping lately.
Today Jan.
7th Larry Weeks found a little group of birds coming off the Bitterroot
River bank that
included a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, a SONG SPARROW, and GOLDEN-
CROWNED KINGLETS. On Jan. 4th Bob Danley, Paul Hayes and Wayne Tree
combed the island and found TWO BEWICK'S WRENS (ONLY one had been found in
December), a WINTER WREN, a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW and an immature
NORTHERN GOSHAWK - a great collection for anyplace in Montana in the winter.
Ted Nordhagen found a SNOWY OWL south of Westby today the 7th.
Jan. 6th Dan Casey found a MEW GULL and a pair of RED-BREASTED
MERGANSERS on Somers Bay on Flathead Lake.
The Missouri River at Great Falls has had some good birds lately. Sharon
Dewart-
Hanson reported a TRUMPETER SWAN is still being seen there. Recent reports
have
also mentioned a lone American White Pelican. Over the New Years Peggy
Persico
was birding the Missouri in Great Falls and reported seeing the LONG-TAILED
DUCK.
She also found an EARED GREBE near the Fish Hatchery.
Larry Weeks found an AMERICAN PIPIT at the Smurfit Stone Plant west of
Missoula
in late December and was last seen about the 31st of December (no reports
for this
year yet).
On the first Bob Rost reported that his friend in Victor Hap Hahn has had a
VARIED
THRUSH hanging around near his feeders for a couple of weeks. There was
also one
found on the Troy Christmas Bird Count. Bob also saw a HOARY REDPOLL in a
flock
of COMMON REDPOLLS near Ninepipe NWR recently but unfortunately I lost the
date.
Bob also saw a FERRUGINOUS HAWK on Back Road west of Pablo on Jan 1st.
For those interested, GYRFALCONS were seen on the Bigfork and Ninepipe
Christmas
Bird Counts.
Ted Nordhagen saw two TURKEY VULTURES west of Terry Dec. 21st.
Larry Weeks will lead a half day field trip to Smurfit-Stone on Saturday
Jan. 12th. Meet
at the UofM field house parking lot at 930 AM or at the mill on Mullan Road
at 1000 AM
If you have bird sightings you would like to share, please leave a message
or call
Carole or Terry at 549-6027. Thanks and good birding to you. HL-274.
