Welcome to the North Dakota Rare Bird Alert compiled by the North
Dakota Birding Society. This report was prepared on Tuesday, Jan. 12.
Unless otherwise noted, any phone numbers mentioned are area code 701.

Transcriber's Note: Birds listed in ALL CAPS in the Birds Mentioned
section signify that the Revised Checklist of North Dakota Birds
lists them as Occasional, Accidental, Extirpated, or never having
occurred before for the season being reported.
Mostly raptors, some feeder birds and a fly-by this week.

The GOLDEN EAGLE that Doug Norquist saw west of Buxton on Jan. 7
was the first one he had seen in 12 years in Traill County.  Just west of
Buxton,
Doug also reported a few LAPLAND LONGSPURS and some SNOW
BUNTINGS here and there.  For details, contact him at 847-2210.

Mark Otnes recorded a SHORT-EARED OWL just west and south of
Fargo on Jan. 8.  He says the owl was over the Maple River, between
Chaffee and Horace.  Mark also saw quite a few flocks of SNOW
BUNTINGS and HORNED LARKS with a handful of LAPLAND
LONGSPURS.  You can reach him at 241-4194.

Carol Arzt has identified the bird that visited her yard at Harwood early
this month as a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK.  It was considerate enough

Jean Legge saw single BALD EAGLES on Jan. 8 near Marion and on
Jan. 9 north of Valley City.  Her feeders near Valley City have attracted
three pairs of PURPLE FINCHES for the past three weeks, plus about
50 AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES, three COMMON REDPOLLS,
and the local WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, BLACK-CAPPED
CHICKADEES, HAIRY WOODPECKERS and DOWNY WOODPECKERS.

Up to three EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES have been hanging around a
feeder in New Town.  Bernice Houser's feeders near New Town have been
visited by AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES and PURPLE FINCHES, as well
as a few PINE SISKINS and one  COMMON REDPOLL, plus the regular
BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES, DOWNY WOODPECKERS and a
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH.  You can contact Bernice at sanishnd@rtc.coop

Ron Martin was surprised to see a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE fly in front
of his vehicle as he drove on Valley Street in Minot on Jan. 8.  Ron says the
bird landed in a nearby juniper tree.  For details, it's jrmartin@srt.com
