Welcome to the North Dakota Rare Bird Alert compiled by the North
Dakota Birding Society. This report was prepared on Tuesday, Jan. 19.
Unless otherwise noted, any phone numbers mentioned are area code 701.
Transcriber's Note: Birds listed in ALL CAPS in the Birds Mentioned
section signify that the Revised Checklist of North Dakota Birds
lists them as Occasional, Accidental, Extirpated, or never having
occurred before for the season being reported.
"Winter birds" have taken over the spotlight, but there are other sightings,
too.
Dave Lambeth believes one species may be on the increase in the Grand Forks
area. Ann Flower had about 30 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS feeding in
spruce trees along the Red River, north of Grand Forks on Jan. 17. She also
reported a female RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER and two AMERICAN
TREE SPARROWS. Dave found two WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS
on Jan. 18 at a farmstead northwest of the Grand Forks airport, and at least
five more at another farmstead northwest of the Grand Forks Air Force Base.

The WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL that Keith Corliss discovered in the
Embden spruce grove on Jan. 18 was among 24 species he recorded in about
90 minutes in southwestern Cass County. Other sightings included two male
RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS south of Embden. Keith reports good
numbers of upland birds east of the Alice slough: nine SHARP-TAILED
GROUSE and more than 20 RING-NECKED PHEASANTS. Contact
him at koolhand@juno.com
Ross Lagasse observed a male NORTHERN CARDINAL in St. John on
Jan. 17. He adds that the bird has been visiting a feeder there since early
December. The stop also produced several AMERICAN ROBINS,
CEDAR WAXWINGS, DARK-EYED JUNCOS, WHITE-BREASTED
NUTHATCHES, BLUE JAYS, HAIRY WOODPECKERS, DOWNY
WOODPECKERS, EUROPEAN STARLINGS and HOUSE SPARROWS.
Between St. John and Rolla, Ross added a COMMON RAVEN, and he
noted many AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES and PINE SISKINS at a
feeder in Rolla. For details, contact him at on2stix@yahoo.com
From Horace, Linda Gregg has had male and female NORTHERN
CARDINALS at her feeders for most of the winter. She has also had
daily visits from a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER. Linda is at
lgregg@far.midco.net
On Jan. 15, Rod Fossen saw a SNOWY OWL near Rugby. Earlier in
the day, he observed a COMMON RAVEN and a BALD EAGLE near
a road kill. You can reach Rod at rfossen@min.midco.net
Corey Ellingson and his mother counted 23 species in three hours on
Jan. 18 in the Bismarck-Mandan area. Highlights included three COMMON
GOLDENEYES and a COMMMON MERGANSER at the Heskett power
plant, but no Canada geese or mallards at the site. They also recorded two
adult BALD EAGLES, MERLIN, SHARP-SHINNED HAWK and
NORTHERN SHRIKE. Yard birds included RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH
and 19 EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES. For details, it's

first two weeks of January. You can reach him at staneliason_2000@yahoo.com

ROBINS on Jan. 16. Dick may have more information at
