Welcome to the North Dakota Rare Bird Alert compiled by the North
Dakota Birding Society. This report was prepared on Tuesday, Jan. 26.
Unless otherwise noted, any phone numbers mentioned are area code 701.

Transcriber's Note: Birds listed in ALL CAPS in the Birds Mentioned
section signify that the Revised Checklist of North Dakota Birds
lists them as Occasional, Accidental, Extirpated, or never having
occurred before for the season being reported.

It's a fairly common bird in North Dakota, but certainly not in January.

Wayne Easley tells Corey Ellingson about the GREAT BLUE HERON

seen below the Harvey dam, which is just outside the city of Harvey.

Wayne's Jan. 23 sighting of the heron was in some open water in a marshy area.

Wayne isn't available, but you might get more information from Corey at

crackerjackbirder@bis.midco.net

Ron Martin didn't find many birds in his annual January raptor survey in

McHenry County. Ron covered the 85 mile route from Velva to the J.Clark

Salyer National Wildlife Refuge headquarters on Jan. 17, and recorded four

BALD EAGLES, two COMMON RAVENS and a ROUGH-LEGGED

HAWK. He says both the eagle and raven numbers were below normal.

You can reach Ron at jrmartin@srt.com

Dave Lambeth didn't see many birds on his Jan. 20 trip from Grand Forks to

the air base and back. He observed four SNOWY OWLS, a SHORT-EARED

OWL and three AMERICAN CROWS. However, Dave reported a GREAT

HORNED OWL spent much of the day in his back yard. For details, contact

him at davidlambeth58201@yahoo.com

Bob Anderson visited the Embden spruce grove on Jan. 19 and was pleased

to find 17 very vocal WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS. You can reach Bob

at bob.anderson@vcsu.edu

Lillian Crook recorded a partial albino DARK-EYED JUNCO at her Bismarck

feeder on Jan. 19. She says the bird had an all white tail, top and bottom.

That concludes this report from the North Dakota Birding Society. This
report is normally updated each Tuesday.
