Welcome to the North Dakota Rare Bird Alert compiled by the North
Dakota Birding Society. This report was prepared on Tuesday, April 13.
Unless otherwise noted, any phone numbers mentioned are area code 701.
Transcriber's Note: Birds listed in ALL CAPS in the Birds Mentioned
section signify that the Revised Checklist of North Dakota Birds
lists them as Occasional, Accidental, Extirpated, or never having
occurred before for the season being reported.
A couple of "earliest ever" sightings headline our report this week.
Ron Martin saw his earliest ever SMITH'S LONGSPUR while birding in Towner
NDST
LOON, SWAINSON'S HAWK, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, MERLIN, PEREGRINE
FALCON, BONAPARTE'S GULL, SHORT-EARED OWL, HERMIT THRUSH,
FOX SPARROW, YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD and BREWER'S BLACKBIRD
plus a WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL. Ron toured Oak Park in Minot the following day,
finding BROWN CREEPER, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, RUBY-CROWNED
KINGLET, HERMIT THRUSH, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, and FOX SPARROW.
Ron noted on April 5 that the COOPER'S HAWKS were back on territory, and he
watched
six male WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS on territory near the Eagles Club. For

From Fargo, Dennis Wiesenborn saw his personal earliest CHIPPING SPARROW on
April 10. Other sightings that day included YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, NORTHERN
FLICKERS and YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS at Pioneer Park on the Moorhead side
of the river, plus two COOPER'S HAWKS and a PEREGRINE FALCON nearby. On April
12, Dennis recorded a WINTER WREN in Trefoil Park, and heard a HERMIT THRUSH
singing.
At Trefoil Park, the set of songbirds included several FOX SPARROWS and SONG
SPARROWS
plus YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, RUBY-CROWNED
KINGLETS, EASTERN PHOEBES, BROWN CREEPER, more than 100 DARK-EYED JUNCOS
plus TURKEY VULTURE and NORTHERN FLICKERS overhead. Dennis also noted that a
pair
of NORTHERN CARDINALS had been present for four days. You can reach him at

A SONG SPARROW made a quick stop in Rick Holbrook's Fargo yard on April 12, and
he reported
nine SANDHILL CRANES south of NDSU on April 9. Contact Rick at

On April 10, Bob O'Connor counted 45 TURKEY VULTURES over the Red River between
Fargo
and Moorhead in about an hour. He's at robert.oconnor@ndsu.edu
Keith Corliss observed his first HERMIT THRUSH of the season on April 9, plus
four FOX SPARROWS
at Elmwood Park in West Fargo. He says a pair of COOPER'S HAWKS appears to have
taken up

Connie Norheim received reports of two very early orioles. Friends told her of
a BALTIMORE ORIOLE
in a south Fargo yard on April 7, and another in a West Fargo yard on April 11.
Connie's visit to Elmwood
Park in West Fargo on April 12 revealed RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, BELTED KINGFISHER,
FOX
SPARROW, HERMIT THRUSH, BROWN CREEPER and EASTERN PHOEBE. Near Harwood on
April 11, Connie saw an AMERICAN BITTERN, and recorded COMMON MERGANSER,
RED-BREASTED
MERGANSER and HOODED MERGANSER all in the same day for the first time.
First-of-the-year species
from Lake Bertha were BLUE-WINGED TEAL, RING-NECKED DUCK, BUFFLEHEAD, RUDDY
DUCK, PIED-BILLED GREBE, RED-NECKED GREBE, DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT, NORTHERN
HARRIER, AMERICAN COOT, SANDHILL CRANE, WILSON'S SNIPE, SONG SPARROW and
WESTERN MEADOWLARK. At Embden Pines, Connie added a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, and
the
Fargo lagoons yielded CALIFORNIA GULL. You can reach Connie at 232-4386.
The Fargo yard of Mark Otnes had a brief visit by a WINTER WREN on April 12. He
also saw five EASTERN
PHOEBES and eight SONG SPARROWS near the Blue Cross building. On April 9, Mark
recorded FOX
SPARROW, COMMON LOON and EASTERN PHOEBE at Crystal Springs, while the Chase
Lake area held
NDST
FRANKLIN'S GULL and BONAPARTE'S GULL. At Jamestown, Mark added EASTERN PHOEBE
and
EASTERN SCREECH -OWL, and then finished up with EARED GREBE at Sanborn Slough in
Barnes County.

Another bunch of new arrivals in the Jamestown area, according to Larry Igl. He
reports the TRUMPETER SWAN
was still being seen east of Jamestown on April 12, BAIRD'S SPARROWS and nesting
COMMON GRACKLES
on April 11, TREE SWALLOWS and HERMIT THRUSH on April 10, GREATER SCAUP and
BROWN-HEADED
COWBIRDS on April 9, FRANKLIN'S GULLS, TREE SWALLOWS and YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD
on
April 8, SAY'S PHOEBE on April 7, RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, SWAINSON'S HAWK,
TURKEY
VULTURES, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET and GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET on April 6, BOHEMIAN
WAXWINGS with CEDAR WAXWINGS on April 6 and DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS and GREAT
BLUE HERON on April 5. A late sighting was the SNOWY OWL found near Leal in
Barnes County on April 2.

Also from Jamestown, Dan Buchanan reported a BROWN CREEPER in his backyard on
April 12, 12 TURKEY
VULTURES over northeast Jamestown on April 9, and an EASTERN SCREECH-OWL and
MERLIN in southwest
Jamestown on April 8. Dan is at 252-6604.
Wayne and Wanda Easley discovered their first SWAINSON'S HAWK of the season
near Wellsburg in Wells County
on April 10. On the following day, Wayne saw several ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS in
Sheridan County,
FERRUGINOUS HAWKS on their nest in Kidder County and a MARBLED GODWIT near
Tuttle. Wayne counted
22 TURKEY VULTURES over Harvey on his return. On April 7, he saw a lone
SHORT-EARED OWL north of
Harvey, and noted that nearby Goose Lake was hosting the most GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE he had

Randy Joe Toppen reported a WILSON'S SNIPE winnowing about seven miles southeast
of Valley City on April
11. He's at 845-0483.
Near Sanborn, Jean Legge observed two small flocks of SONG SPARROWS on April 6,
and then a loner at her
feeder near Valley City. She also noted more TUNDRA SWANS near Sanborn for the
third straight day. Jean
reported the arrival of DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS on April 5, saw the EASTERN
SCREECH-OWL
in Jamestown, and discovered a MERLIN nest on April 6. Contact Jean at

Dave Lambeth reported a high number of SHORT-EARED OWLS in the Kellys Slough
area. On the evening of
April 7, Dave and Cec counted 30 in about six sections of grasslands. On April
12, Dave added AMERICAN
WHITE PELICAN, YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER and YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER--all seasonal
firsts. Other sightings included TURKEY VULTURE, NORTHERN FLICKER, HERMIT
THRUSH, SONG
SPARROWS on territory and FOX SPARROW. On April 11, Dave noted that both the
male and female
PEREGRINE FALCONS had found their new home. You can reach Dave at

Clark Talkington covered New John's Lake in Burleigh County and the Turtle Lake
area in McLean County on
April 12. He recorded 435 COMMON MERGANSERS, RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, COMMON
LOON, HORNED GREBE, SWAINSON'S HAWK, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, MERLIN and FOX
SPARROW. A drive from Ashley to Bismarck on April 6 turned up a RED-BREASTED
MERGANSER pair at
Harriet Lake and 1000 CALIFORNIA GULLS on Salt Lake. On April 7, Clark recorded
RED-BREASTED
MERGANSER, WILSON'S SNIPE, NORTHERN SHRIKE and ten great horned owl nests.

Corey Ellingson hit some Bismarck hot spots on April 12. At Sleepy Hollow Park,
he observed NORTHERN
FLICKER, EASTERN PHOEBE, HERMIT THRUSH, BROWN CREEPER, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET,
RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER and SWAMP SPARROW. At the Tom
O'Leary Arboretum, he added SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, NORTHERN FLICKER, EASTERN
PHOEBE,
RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET and FOX SPARROW. Moving on to Highland Acres, Corey found
GOLDEN-
CROWNED KINGLET, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET and NORTHERN FLICKER. Corey teamed up
with
Clark Talkington for 63 species on April 11 at McKenzie Slough and Long Lake
National Wildlife Refuge.
Highlights included many arrivals such as four YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS at Menoken
Grove. Also:
BLUE-WINGED TEAL, GREATER SCAUP, PIED-BILLED GREBE, HORNED GREBE, EARED GREBE,
WESTERN GREBE, AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, SWAINSON'S HAWK, GREATER YELLOWLEGS,
LESSER YELLOWLEGS, BONAPARTE'S GULL, TREE SWALLOW, YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD
and a late ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK. Corey birded around Bismarck with his mother on
April 8, finding their
first SONG SPARROW of the year and a male WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL at Tom O'Leary
Arboretum,
a LESSER BLACK-BILLED GULL with about 500 birds at Fox Island, at least six
EASTERN BLUEBIRDS
and at least four winnowing WILSON'S SNIPES at Sibley Park. For details, it's

Bob Scarlett couldn't get close enough for a positive identification of the
egret he saw along Apple Creek
southeast of Bismarck on April 12, but he also saw a GREAT BLUE HERON nearby,
and a GREAT HORNED
OWL on a nest near the airport. On April 11, Bob observed a possible BURROWING
OWL in a prairie dog

The first TREE SWALLOWS reached Peder Stenslie's backyard in Mandan on April 11.

From Riverdale, Shawn Goodchild says an Oregon-race DARK-EYED JUNCO has been
coming to his feeders
since April 5. He also noted the arrival of the first female COMMON GRACKLE to
join the gang of males.

A new yard species for Marty Anderson was the EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE that
appeared on April 10.

Mo O'Mara returned to a favorite pond in the McKenzie County grasslands on April
11. She recorded CANADA
GOOSE, MALLARD, AMERICAN WIGEON, NORTHERN SHOVELER, BLUE-WINGED TEAL, scaup,
COMMON MERGANSER and BUFFLEHEAD. Nearby were MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD, NORTHERN
FLICKER, TURKEY VULTURE, AMERICAN CROW and WESTERN MEADOWLARK. Contact Mo

From Dickinson, Jesse Kolar saw a male and a female WOOD DUCK searching for a
place to nest in a tree in
Jesse's dad's backyard on April 10. Other recent sightings: COMMON GRACKLE,
RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD,
GREAT BLUE HERON, SONG SPARROW, NORTHERN FLICKER, EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE,
AMERICAN GOLDFINCH, DARK-EYED JUNCO, WESTERN MEADOWLARK, CANADA GOOSE,
