During the past week or so there has been a major influx of BOHEMIAN
WAXWINGS with over a 1000 seen in a single flock on Feb. 9. There are also
quite a few CEDAR WAXWINGS among them. An influx of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS has
also been noted this past week. The HERMIT THRUSH seen at the Fluvarium (Long
Pond) several wek ago was still present as of Feb. 2. The Long Pond
BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was seen again on Feb 3. Unusual for St. John's was a
BOREAL OWL seen on Old Topsail Road on Feb. 7. The Quidi Vidi Lake GYRFALCON
and YELLOW-LEGGED GULL are still being seen on a regular basis. The two
BONAPARTE'S GULLS have been seen off and on at the Pier 17 Sewer Outlet in St.
John's Harbour. A NORTHERN GOSHAWK ws seen in Bowring Park on Jan. 28.
There was a flock of about 400 COMMON EIDERS and a single KING EIDER seen off
Cape Spear on Feb. 9. Two DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT were seen in St. John's
Harbour on Feb. 6.
A trip down the southern shore of the Avalon Peninsula on Feb. 8 resulted in
the Province's first winter record for DUNLIN, with a bird seen at Renews. The
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER is still going strong at Renews. There were 5 RUDDY
TURNSTONE and 75 PURPLE SANDPIPERS seen at Point La Haye. The NORTHERN
MOCKINGBIRD and 5 COMMON GRACKLES are still present in Ferryland. Uncommon for
winter, was a SHORT-EARED OWL seen at St. Shott's. A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was also
seen at St. Shott's.
