- Transcript

    On Feb. 24 a freshly dead SHORT-EARED OWL was found near Kelly's Brook in
St. John's.  The Long Pond BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was seen again on Feb. 29.
The GYRFALCON continues to be seen fairly regularly at Quidi Vidi Lake.  Two
COMMON TEAL were seen in Kelly's Brook on Mar. 3.  Noteable waterfowl still
present in St. John's include at least 4 AMERICAN WIGEON, 3 EURASIAN WIGEON, 1
GADWALL, 12 GREATER SCAUP, 3 LESSER SCAUP, 3 RING-NECKED DUCK, 7 TUFTED DUCK, 1
HOODED MERGANSER, 1 WOOD DUCK and 2 AMERICAN COOT.

    Hoary Redpolls have been reported this past week from various parts of the
province.  Their appearance near Lab City, Labrador on March 6 is not as
unexpected.  A NORTHERN HAWK OWL seen near Lab City on March 6 was a good
sighting.

    Noteable sightings outside St. John's this past week included a BONAPARTE'S
GULL, an AMERICAN WIGEON and a EURASIAN WIGEON at Spaniard's Bay on Feb. 26; 3
COMMON TEAL, 4 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT and 2 AMERICAN WIGEON at Harbour Grace
on Feb. 26 and 3 BUFFLEHEADS at Clarke's Beach on the same date (all these
communities are in Conception Bay North).  South of St. John's, there was a
SANDERLING seen at Renews on Feb. 29.  A HOODED MERGANSER was seen in Renews on
March 2.
