You have reached the Cape May Birding Hotline, a service of New Jersey
Audubon Society’s Cape May Bird Observatory.  This week’s message was  
prepared on Friday March 31.  The roster this week includes sightings  
of VESPER SPARROW, GREAT CORMORANT, RED-THROATED LOON, WILSON’S  
SNIPE, WINTER WREN, FORSTER’S TERN, TREE SWALLOW, BARN SWALLOW,  
PIPING PLOVER, PINE WARBLER and YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER.

Spring has sprung and migration is happening!

There have been numerous reports of flocks of GREAT EGRETS crossing  
the bay.  There are still numbers of SURF and BLACK SCOTER in the  
Bay, as well as, NORTHERN GANNET.  On 3/29 there as one GREAT  
CORMORANT loafing on the Concrete Ship along with 50+ RED-THROATED  
LOONS in the surrounding water.

A VESPER SPARROW was seen in the Magnesite Plant area on 3/29.

WILSON’S SNIPE is still being seen at the Meadow’s; also one was  
spotted at the Beanery on 3/30.  Also at the Beanery on 3/30 were 5+  
WINTER WRENS.

Numerous FORSTER’S TERNS are being seen in the Cape May area this  
week with 3 spotted from the St. Peter’s jetty on 3/30 and 5+ seen  
from North Cape May on 3/29.

Four TREE SWALLOWS were also seen from the St. Peter’s jetty on 3/30  
and one BARN SWALLOW was seen today, 3/31, flying over Seagrove  
Avenue near the Northwood Center.

More PIPING PLOVER have arrived in Cape May.  On 3/29 three were seen  
displaying along the beach between the Meadows and the Cape May Point  
State Park.

PINE WARBLERS are being seen in and around Cape May up to Belleplain  
State Forest.  Two PINE WARBLERS were seen at Higbee’s Beach on 3/30,  
also two were in Cape May along Lafayette Street on 3/29.

Finally, one YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER was reported from Belleplain  
State Forest near the Headquarters today 3/31.

Point, as promised, has returned to being open 7 days a week 9-4:30.   
The Center for Research and Education on Route 47 in Goshen is open 7  
days a week, 9-4:30.
