This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Thursday September
2, 2010 with reports of AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, AMERICAN AVOCET, BAIRD'S
SANDPIPER, BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER, PHILADELPHIA VIREO, PROTHONOTARY WARBLER,
LARK SPARROW, CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, seasonal and local reports of interest.
Brigantine NWR Aug 28-30 hosted YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, TRICOLORED HERON, 96
GLOSSY IBIS, 4 AMERICAN AVOCETS, 25 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, 6 STILT
SANDPIPERS, 4-6 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS, 20 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 19 CASPIAN
TERNS, and BLACK TERN. Four AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS and 3 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS
were noted in the northwest pool Aug 31. A PHILADELPHIA VIREO was detected on
the Akers Trail Aug 30.
Sandy Hook reports this week included 4 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS, LESSER BLACK-BACKED
GULL, 2 CASPIAN TERNS, and BLACK TERN -- all at the end of the FIsherman's
Trail; 2-3 YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHERS, and several YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOOS.
Twenty-two species of warblers were noted at the hook Aug 27-30 including
TENNESSEE WARBLER, 3 BLACKBURNIAN WARBLERS, 2 BAY-BREASTED WARBLERS,
PROTHONOTARY WARBLER, WILSON'S WARBLER, 4 CANADA WARBLERS, and 2 YELLOW-BREASTED
CHATS. Most of the warblers were found in the scout camp/Raccoon Alley and
garden/officer's club areas. A LARK SPARROW was at K-lot Sep 1 and a MOURNING
WARBLER was along the Road to Nowhere Sep 2.
Spruce Run Reservoir sightings this week included GLOSSY IBIS, LITTLE BLUE
HERON, SNOWY EGRET, MERLIN, 2 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS, 2 CASPIAN TERNS, and
COMMON NIGHTHAWK. Passerines observed at the WMA Aug 27-29 included PHILADELPHIA
VIREO, YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, NASHVILLE WARBLER, TENNESSEE WARBLER,
BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, and BAY-BREASTED WARBLER.
An impressive 27 BALD EAGLES were tallied at Raccoon Ridge Aug 26; also there
that day were 3 COMMON RAVENS and 50 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS.
Two CAPE MAY WARBLERS were noted in the spruce grove at Watergate in the
Delaware Water Gap Aug 30.
The Walker Ave Wetlands in Wayne hosted a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER Aug 27-29. Also
there this week were 3 LITTLE BLUE HERONS and 4 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS.
Two SORAS were seen along the Marsh Discovery Trail at DeKorte Environment
Center in Lyndhurst Sep 1. Another SORA and CASPIAN TERN were noted at nearby
Mill Creek Point the same day.
A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was detected at the wetland restoration site in Liberty
State Park Aug 27.
Celery Farm reports this week included 2 YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHERS, NASHVILLE
WARBLER, WILSON'S WARBLER, and PURPLE FINCHES Aug 27. Single PHILADELPHIA VIREOS
were noted Aug 30 & 31 and YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was found there this week as
well.
A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was found at Glenhurst Meadows (Warren Green Acres) Aug
29.
Migrants noted at the National Park Dredge Spoils this week included
PHILADELPHIA VIREO, YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, and
MOURNING WARBLER. Also in Gloucester County were 42 CASPIAN TERNS at Floodgates.
Salem County reports this week were of 10+ LITTLE BLUE HERONS and 4+ COMMON
MOORHENS at Mannington Marsh Aug 28 and 50 CATTLE EGRETS along Compromise Rd;
Fort Mott State Park Aug 28 hosted RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, 4 CHESTNUT-SIDED
WARBLERS, YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT, and 200+ BOBOLINKS.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Sandy Hook has no summer entrance fee for birding as long as you park in
designated lots. Tell the toll attendant "you are birding and not parking in
beach access lots." This allows you to park at the Visitor Center, Horseshoe
Cove, Scout Camp, all Fort Hancock lots, K-lot, and SHBO. Fees are not charged
before 7 am and after 5 pm. If you arrive before 7 am an attendant at the Ranger
Station will give you a pass that allows you free access to all parking areas.
