This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Thursday March 24,
2011 with reports of EURASIAN WIGEON, SANDHILL CRANE, YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD,
seasonal and local reports of interest, and announcements.
Three SANDHILL CRANES were viewed along the Wallkill River from a canoe Mar 20.
The birds were in a farm field along the west bank opposite marker # 7 on the
paddler's map. At the Liberty Loop impoundments, thousands of waterfowl were
present Mar 19-20 including 21 TUNDRA SWANS, 6 REDHEADS, 1,000+ RING-NECKED
DUCKS, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, and NORTHERN PINTAILS. Also present were 3 HORNED
GREBES and 30 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS. Other Sussex County reports were of a GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE at Paulinskill Pond near Junction Rd & Newton-Swartswood Rd
Mar 18, a drake EURASIAN WIGEON in a flooded field opposite the runway along
Creek Rd in Green Twp Mar 22-23, a RED-NECKED GREBE off Hendershot's Point at
Swartswood Lake, and 37 COMMON REDPOLLS at the playground at Vernon Crossing
Marsh Mar 18.
Sixty LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were tallied at Spruce Run Reservoir Mar 18.
A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER continues at Glenhurst Meadows through Mar 18, seen from
the garden parking lot area.
Sandy Hook sightings this week included 1,160 SNOW GEESE, 34 GREAT BLUE HERONS,
an adult female NORTHERN GOSHAWK, 7 WILSON'S SNIPE, 21 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, and an
early BARN SWALLOW Mar 18; RED-NECKED GREBE on north pond and a COMMON RAVEN
Mar 19, and an adult ICELAND GULL at the false hook Mar 22. A free, detailed

Two COMMON RAVENS were soaring with a BALD EAGLE over South Amboy Mar 20. For

The drake EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL was at the third pond west in the Lake
Takanassee chain Mar 21. An ICELAND GULL was at Shark River estuary Mar 21 and
a GLAUCOUS GULL was off Clem Conover Blvd in Deal Mar 22. More information on

Two TUNDRA SWANS were found in a field along Applegarth Rd in Monroe Twp
opposite the Nativity of our Lord Church Mar 19.
Barnegat Light State Park/Inlet hosted 20 HARLEQUIN DUCKS, 100 COMMON EIDERS, a
first-cycle LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, and GLAUCOUS GULL Mar 20.
Brigantine NWR reports Mar 21 included a drake REDHEAD, 20 CANVASBACKS, A GOLDEN
EAGLE, and SHORT-EARED OWL.
A SANDHILL CRANE continues to be seen from the Rte 45 crossing at Mannington
Marsh in Salem County through Mar 20. A YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD continues near
Sharptown/Cow Town rodeo through Mar 18. Look for the blackbird at the cattle
feed lot on King's Highway opposite Melissa Lane north of the intersection with
Rte 40.
