This is Pinyon Jay with the New Mexico Bird Report for
el Cinco de Mayo,  2008 sponsored by the New Mexico 
Ornithological Society.  When phone  numbers are given for
private property, please call before going to ask  
permission.  In this nice weather and migrants, New 
Mexican birders  were out en masse.
 
Highlights:  Glossy Ibis, Whimbrels, Yellow-throated,
Palm, Hooded,  Red-faced, Kentucky, and Prothonotary 
Warblers.

In Santa Fe County:
At the NM Penitentiary on May 4 JB had a MARBLED  GODWIT 
under a sprinkler.  He had at the Marty Sanchez Golf 
Course  a LESSER YELLOWLEGS and a SPOTTED SANDPIPER with a 
NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH at  Cerrillos.
 
In San Miguel County:
TT had a male PYRRHULOXIA on the west side road at  the 
Las Vegas Refuge on April 26. At the refuge at Brown’s 
Marsh JA on  May 2 had two GREAT EGRETS with many WILSON’S 
PHALAROPES and three  WHITE-FACED IBIS.
 
In Roosevelt County:
At the migrant trap west of Melrose JS on May 2 had  a 
CASSIN’S VIREO, a GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE, two HOUSE WRENS, 
and a  RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH.  CW, NP, MB, JO, JP, WW on 
May 3 had a  YELLOW-THROATED WARLBER on the south end, a 
male NORTHERN PARULA, male  BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER, 
the vireo, and the nuthatch.  JO and AF on  May 4 had the 
Yellow-throated, singing Parula, OVENBIRD, BROWN 
THRASHER,  CATBIRD, two LONG-EARED OWLS, ROSE-BREASTED 
GROSBEAK, the nuthatch, a  CASSIN’S VIREO, up to 150 
HERMIT THRUSHES and 20 SPOTTED TOWHEES.
The  group at Boones Draw on May 3 near Portales found a 
male BLACK-AND-WHITE  WARBLER, WHITE-EYED VIREO, a 
TOWNSEND’S WARBLER, MOUNTAIN CHICKADEE,  CASSIN’S VIREO, 
two GRAY FLYCATCHERS, and a BRONZED COWBIRD.  JO on May  4 
had an AMERICAN REDSTART, RED-EYED VIREO, two TOWNSEND’S 
WARBLERS, and  three CASSIN’S VIREOS.
At Pep on May 3 JP reported a singing CLAY-COLORED  
SPARROW.
 
In Curry County:
At the Clovis Sewage Ponds be sure to tell them that  you 
are there to bird.  JO found a MARBLED GODWIT on the 
ponds on  May 2.
 
In Cibola County:
CJG had at the El Morro NM on May 3 a HEPATIC TANAGER  and 
an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER.  On May 4 SB found a KENTUCKY  
WARBLER on the Inscription Trail (photos by CJG).  It was still there  in the 
morning of May 5.
 
In Bernalillo County:
DP on May 2 on the west side of the Rio Grande in  Albu-
querque a half mile on the path from the Montaño Bridge 
near a mile  4 sign found a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH in a wet 
area near the Rio, plus a  female EASTERN BLUEBIRD and a 
female COMMON MERGANSER.
At the Rio Grande  Nature Center JJ on April 27 saw a 
SOLITARY SANDPIPER on the parking lot  pond and a GRAY 
FLYCATCHER at the Herb Garden.  On May 2 DP on the  
parking lot pond had a male HOODED MERGANSER.  DH on May 
4 saw a  RED-FACED WARBLER on the Bosque Trail ¾ of the 
way to the new bridge.
DP  on April 27 found a NORTHERN PARULA and a female ROSE-
BREASTED GROSBEAK in  the San Antonio Open Space behind 
the San Antonio Church on NM 14 a few  hundred yards up 
the trail.  The Parula was found later by JJ.
 
In Valencia County:
DH on May 3 had a SEMIPALMATGED PLOVER at the Taco  Bell 
marsh in Belen.  BV on May 4 had the plover and a 
FRANKLIN’S  GULL with a pair of INDIGO BUNTINGS and a 
DUSKY FLYCATCHER at the Belen  Bosque plus another
Franklin’s and 13 CATTLE EGRETS on NM 314 south of the  
Bernalillo Co. line.
 
In Torrance County:
TH on May 1 saw a male ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK at his  home 
in the Manzano Mts. north of Mountainview.  12 BAND-
TAILED  PIGEONS have been present with a male AMERICAN 
GOLDFINCH.
 
In Socorro County:
At the Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio on  April 
27 BV had a YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER on the seasonal road,
while CB  saw a western PALM WARBLER there.  DP on April 
29 saw a male VERMILION  FLYCATCHER near the Willow Deck.  
On April 29 RV and MH saw a  YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON 
near the entrance to the seasonal road.  And  on April 30 
DC had the ten WHITE-FRONTED GEESE and the GLOSSY IBIS 
still  in the same places (seasonal road and bottom of 
Marsh Loop).  He also  had a MOORHEN at the ditch where 
the one way road ends on the Farm  Loop.  High counts were 
948 Dowitchers and 1653 WILSON’S PHALAROPES. RC  on April 
25 saw the introduced APLOMADO FALCON at the main lake.
JO on  May 1 saw a MARBLED GODWIT and the night-heron in 
the ditch at the seasonal  road entrance.  DH on May 3 saw the heron and the 
SCOTT’S ORIOLE pair in  the Cactus 
Garden, and a SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER at the northeast  
corner of the Farm Loop.  He and MH had a GRACE’S WARBLER 
on  the  seasonal road near the  Chupadera Deck.  MH on 
May 3  also found a PALM WARBLER on the seasonal road 
after it turns to the  northeast, the Grace’s, scissor-
tailed, heron and the GLOSSY IBIS on the  east side of the Marsh Loop.  CW, 
MB, and NP on May 2 had two SEMIPALMATED  
SANDPIPERS near the heronry, several WILLETS, three 
MARBLED GODWITS, and  12 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS.  A CHAETURA 
SWIFT (species?) flew over at  dusk.  CR on May 3 found 
two WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS at the Norton  Blind and 14 
TURKEYS on the Marsh Loop.
At Turtle Bay Park on the NMTU  campus in Socorro on April 
27 JS reported two male INDIGO BUNTINGS, when CB  had four 
of the buntings with MYRTLE WARBLERS, while BV reported 
two  males and a female Indigos.  DP on April 29 saw four 
male INDIGO  BUNTINGS.  MH on May 3 had a pair of 
TOWNSEND’S WARBLERS, a MARSH  WEREN, a male CASSIN’S 
FINCH, and a FRANKLIN’S GULL.
JO at his home near  Luis Lopez south of Socorro on April 
27 had a WOOD DUCK and a TOWNSEND’S  WARBLER.
CR had a WHIMBREL on May 3 at Riverine Park in Socorro.
 

In Chaves County:
JSa in the refuge report for April 28 recorded one  
AMERICAN BITTERN, two FRANKLIN’S GULLS, three MARBLED 
GODWITS, a STILT  SANDPIPER, two SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 
one MISSISSIPPI KITE, with high  counts of 315 IBIS, 317 
DOWITCHERS, and 1667 WILSON’S PHALAROPES.  JH  on April 29 
had 24 WILLETS on Unit 3 and 20 FRANKLIN’S GULLS on Unit  16.  On May 3 JP 
found a WHIMBREL on the southeast corner 
of the tour  loop.  LM and JoO on May 3 at the refuge 
recorded a GOLDEN PLOVER on  Unit 15 and two RED-NECKED 
PHALAROPES at the Oxbow Slough.  There was a  SEMIPALMATED 
PLOVER, SEMIPALMATED and BAIRD’S SANDPIPERS, and a  
MACGILLIVRAY’S WARBLER.
RM on April 26 was apparently the person  reporting the 
REDDISH EGRET at the refuge on Unit 15, plus two AMERICAN  
BITTERNS.
CT on April 5 found up to 50 LESSER PRAIRIE CHICKENS in 
the  Mesacalero Sands leks near the Waldrop Rest Stop 40 
miles east of Roswell on  US380.  JH on April 19 had 20 
at the lek, plus four SCISSOR-TAILED  FLYCATCHERS in the 
rest stop area.  MH, SNC, AM and LG on April 19 had  about 
25 chickens.
The RV group at the Waldrop rest saw an ORANGE-CROWNED  
WARBLER, the flycatchers, and a BARN OWL.
 
In Sierra County:
DC on April 26 in Kingston had a PAINTED REDSTART and  a 
BRIDLED TITMOUSE.  On Forest Road 157 there was two 
BLACK-CHINNED  SPARROWS and an ACORN WOODPECKER.
At Percha Dam State Park JL on April 28 saw  a GREEN 
HERON, CASSIN’S VIREO, and a female AMERICAN REDSTART.  
On  April 28 he had north of Percha Dam a TOWNSEND’S 
WARBLER, a HAMMOND’S  FLYCATCHER, and two WOOD DUCKS.  DC 
on May 1 at Percha saw two  TOWNSEND’S WARBLERS and three 
GRAY FLYCATCHERS.  DP on April 29 at  Percha Dam saw a 
male HOODED WARBLER along the river at the north end.   DC 
saw the Hooded Warbler male on April 26.
DC on May 2 had two  BROWN-CRESTED FLYCATCHERS at the 
creek crossing in upper LAS Animas “Canyon  with a 
TOWNSEND’S WARBLER.  A CASSIN’S VIREO was just before one  
makes the right turn to the crossing.
JL at his home saw CEDAR WAXWINGS,  a BROAD-TAILED 
HUMMINGBIRD, and a male SCOTT’S ORIOLE on April 28.
 
In Catron County:
BH had large numbers of PINYON JAYS in Luna by the San  
Francisco River.
 
In Grant County:
JBi on May 1 had a WORM-EATING WARBLER south of Silver  
City along the lower San Vicente Creek (photo).
MF had a LAWRENCE’S  GOLDFINCH at the Iron Bridge near 
Gila on April 26.  JBi had two male  ROSE-BREASTED 
GROSBEAKS there on April 28.  RSh had an OSPREY near the  
bridge.
The Lawrence’s at the Bayard home of DM stayed till April  
25.  He had a HOODED ORIOLE on April 25.
In the Burro Mountains  south of Silver City on Jack’s 
Peak DG on April 18 had an adult GOSHAWK, a  few OLIVE 
WARBLERS, and four YELLOW-EYED JUNCOS.
On April 29 there were  PURPLE MARTINS near Roberts Lake.
CA had a male INDIGO  BUNTING in her  yard on April 23.
RSh at Bill Evans Lake near Cliff on April 25 had a  
SOLITARY SANDPIPER.
The Hummingbird Festival at Lake Roberts has been  
canceled this year.
 
In Hidalgo County:
SOW and HW in Clanton Canyon south of Animas had a  
WHISKERED SCREECH-OWL in the campground on April 30 with 
GOULD’S TURKEYS  at Blair Well at the canyon mouth and at 
the Oak Grove on May 1.  A  GREATER PEWEE was singing at 
the Geronimo Seep on May 1.
They had an  adult GRAY HAWK on the Diamond A Ranch land 
on April 30 near  Cloverdale.  Remember thou shalt not get 
an inch off the road to look  for it.
RS on April 30 recorded a BLACK HAWK on Hwy. 92 south of  
Virden.
County Hwy.1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray)  
Ranch.  Because of events with thoughtless birders, one 
must NOT go  off the road.
 
In Luna County:
DB had a RED-FACED WARBLER in the Mountain View Cemetery  
in Deming on April 24 with 15 WHITE-FACED IBIS at Pecan 
Park.
 
In Doña Ana County:
LS on May 3 at the La Mesa Bosque saw SPOTTED  SANDPIPERS 
and a male WESTERN TANAGER.
JN on May 4 at the Mesilla Valley  Bosque Park had a 
VIRGINIA RAIL, a male ANNA’S HUMMINGBIRD, OLIVE-SIDED  
DUSKY, and GRAY FLYCATCHERS, a male HEPATIC TANAGER, and 
MARSH WRENS  with a few CAVE SWALLOWS.
At their home near Radium Springs MS recorded a  pair of 
HOODED OIOLES and up to 40 BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRDS.  
MS  on May 2 in the yard saw a male WESTERN TANAGER, 
YELLOW WARBLER, a DARK-EYED  JUNCO, a female CASSIN’S 
FINCH with a CASSIN’S KINGBIRD on May 3.  The  pair of Hooded Oriole were 
still seen on May 2-3.
On April 16 at her Las  Cruces home LS had a HOODED 
ORIOLE.  She still had the male on April  28.
 
In Otero County:
On Otero Mesa on April 28 DG reported quite a few  
migrating BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS.  At Stone Well he has 
seen MYRTLE  WARBLER, DUSKY and WILLOW FLYCATCHERS, and 
LINCOLN’S SPARROW.
At the  Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo the lakes are open 
to birding, but permission  is needed from Holloman AF 
Base to bird the Lake G area to the north.
 
In Eddy County:
RM on April 26 at Brantley Lake had a male PROTHONOTARY  
WARBLER.
At Rattlesnake Springs on April 22 DG had a WORM-EATING  
WARBLER near the chinaberry grove and the GRAY HAWK.  JP, 
JO, WW,  and LL on April 26 saw a PROTHONOTARY WARBLER in the desert near the 
rest rooms  and the hawk with at 
the adjacent Washington Ranch a male INDIGO BUNTING, a  
pair of CASSIN’S FINCHES, a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, and a 
SCISSOR-TAILED  FLYCATCHER.  SW on May 3 found few 
warblers, his first CHIMNEY SWIFT  over, the gray and a 
ZONE-TAILED HAWK, a PHAINOPEPLA, and a female HEPATIC  
TANAGER.  WW on April 30 had a WORM-EATING WARBLER just 
north of  the main pond with a BROWN THRASHER.  A SOLITARY 
SANDPIPER was at the  adjacent Washington Ranch.
ReW on May 4 had a MISSISSIPPI KITE in  Carlsbad.
 
In Lea County:
At the sewage ponds in Tatum on April 26 RV, BT, CW, MB,  
NP, and JB had a NORTHERTN PARULA, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, 
CASSIN'S VIREO  and a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH.  CW, JP, and group had the 
waterthrush on May  3.

Field Trips:
 
Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips. 
May 8-9 is  their Birdathon;  on May 15 to Hondo Canyon in 
the southern Sandias  with Mary Lou Arthur, 299-2565.
 
Saturday, May 10, is North American Bird Count Day for 
each  county.  Contact the leader of your county.  To

On Saturday, May 17, Central Audubon will check out the
Quarai Ruins led  by Cole Wolf and Jim Mosley.  For

On Saturday, May 24, Mesilla Valley Audubon will explore
around the  homes for migrants in Mesilla at the Dam, 
canals, and driveways to Mesilla  Park.  Contact is David
Griffin at 575-382-2080.
 
Sunday, May 25, Central Audubon will bird Orilla Verde 
near  Pilar.  Contact is Jerry Friedman at 505-753-1946.
 
The Rio Grande Nature Center in Albuquerque has Saturday 
and Sunday  morning hikes at 8:30 a.m. through May. There is a parking fee.
 
The Randall Davey Audubon Center in Santa Fe on Upper 
Canyon Road has  Saturday morning bird walks beginning at 
8:30 until 9:30.
