In Sandoval County:
MW had a CASPIAN TERN on May 12 on the Tetilla Peak side
of Cochiti Lake (photo). It didn’t stay long.
In Santa Fe County:
MR on May 11 had two GRAY VIREOS (possibly migrants) at
the Caja del Rio in Santa Fe.
RY on May 14 had EVENING GROSBEAKS, PINE SISKINS, and
many CEDAR WAXWINGS in Santa Fe in the St.Francis/
Galisteo area.
JB had a SNOWY EGRET at the penitentiary near Santa Fe on
May 9.
In San Miguel County:
JSa had a SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER on the southeast
shore of McAllister Lake on May 11.
On May 14 JA and KB had a BOBOLINK in Montezuma near Las
Vegas with an INDIGO BUNTING. Call Kathy at 404-454-
1504.for directions to her home.
In Colfax Co.
JE had a female MAGNIFICENT HUMMINGBIRD at her home in
Angel Fire where one appeared last summer at the Mountain
Meadow Condos on May 13.
In DeBaca County:
LG and AMa on May 10 had in a flooded field near Fort
Sumner WHITE-FACED IBIS.
In Roosevelt County:
At the migrant trap west of Melrose on May 10 LG and AMa
had the RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, HEPATIC TANAGER, ROSE-
BREASTED GROSBEAK, and YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER. RV saw
the Yellow-throated Warbler on May 10.
At Boones Draw near Portales MB and NP on May 5 found
three ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS and two NASHVILLE WARBLERS.
In Curry County:
At the Clovis Sewage Ponds be sure to tell them that you
are there to bird.
In Cibola County:
At the El Morro NM on May 4 SB found a KENTUCKY WARBLER
on the Inscription Trail (photos}. It was still seen by
CJG and JB on May 9, and by CJG on May 12. He saw on May
13 a male BALTIMORE ORIOLE at El Morro.
In Bernalillo County:
CB found on May 13 a male HOODED WARBLER on the Bill
Spring Trail off the Doc Long Picnic Area at the trail’s
start. DP on May 14 found it on May 14 further up the
trail near a rock border.
CD on May 9 found a female HOODED WARBLER on the Rio
Grande Nature Center. CR found it on May 12 between the
Herb Garden and the footbridge, and DP on May 14 found it
again near the back gate.
JJ on May 3 in the Sandias heard FLAMMULATED OWLS calling
at the Doc Long Picnic Area, at mile post 5 on the road,
at the Tree Spring Trailhead, and Dry Camp Picnic Area
with a SAW-WHET OWL heard at a turnout a quarter mile
below the ski area.
In Valencia County:
BV on May 4 had a pair of INDIGO BUNTINGS at the Belen
Bosque.
In Torrance Co.
ES at his home south of Edgewood had a CALLIOPE HUMMING-
BIRD and many PINE SISKINS on May 13.
In Socorro County:
At the Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio DC on
May 7 found the YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON adult near the
start of the seasonal road and the GLOSSY IBIS still at
the south end of the Marsh Loop. JB on May 10 with MB,
NP, RV, MH, and BT had a WHIMBREL and a LITTLE BLUE
HERON. On May 11 JB had the little blue heron with JO,
the glossy ibis, and the night heron with JP, BP, WW, and
CW. JL on May 12 had a singing HOODED WARBLER south of
the Willow Deck and a WHITE-EYED VIREO singing on the
west side of the Farm Loop. DC on May 14 found the
night-heron up the ditch a bit, the Little Blue Heron
with 14 CATTLE EGRETS on the pond north of the middle
road, and four SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS near Audio Stop 5,
but no glossy ibis.
At Turtle Bay Park on the NMTU campus in Socorro JB found
a KENTUCKY WARBLER on May 10. JB, JO, and later JS on
May 11 at the park had a female PROTHONOTARY WARBLER. SM
on May 6 had a male INDIGO BUNTING and a MYRTLE WARBLER
At the Monica Cabin in the San Mateo Mountains on May 4
SM had a male VERMILION FLYCATCHER.
In downtown Socorro at Lopezville Rd. and the NMT golf
course SM saw two SCOTT’S ORIOLES.
JO at his home near Luis Lopez south of Socorro on May 8
had a female CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD at his feeder with the
male ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK still seen.
In Chaves County:
At Bitter Lake Refuge JeS reported for the May 10 count
four MISSISSIPPI KITES, a CANVASBACK, one LEAST TERN, a
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, a BOBWHITE, two MARBLED GODWITS,
a BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRD, four OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHERS,
five MACGILLIVRAY’S WARBLERS, and 112 SNOWY PLOVERS.
At the rest stop south of Mesa on US 285 LG and AMa had a
WARBLING VIREO, two CURVE-BILLED THRASHERS, a NASHVILLE
WARBLER, CARDINAL, PINE SISKIN, and a GREEN-TAILED
TOWHEE.
In Sierra County:
DC on May 12 had two SNOWY PLOVERS near the Elephant
Butte Lake main entrance, a MAGNOLIA WARBLER at Paseo del
Rio Park below the dam with a pair of BRONZED COWBIRDS, a
GRAY FLYCATCHER, and five LESSER NIGHTHAWKS.
On May 10 DC had on the breakwater at the Rock Canyon
Marina a CASPIAN TERN and two BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS. DC
found no tern or plovers on May 11 at the marina, but had
14 FORSTER’S TERNS. He had one Forster’s there on May
14. JB saw the Caspian on May 10.
At Percha Dam State Park on May 5 DC had two GREEN
HERONS, a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, and two GRAY FLYCATCHERS.
JB had a BLACK HAWK on May 10.
At the Dam Site Marina on May 8 JL had a COMMON LOON in
breeding plumage.
DC on May 2 had two BROWN-CRESTED FLYCATCHERS at the
creek crossing in upper Las Animas Canyon. JB had a
ZONE-TAILED HAWK in the canyon on May 10.
In Grant County:
In the Burro Mountains south of Silver City on Jack’s
Peak DG on May 2 to 6 found many BAND-TAILED PIGEONS,
four calling PYGMY OWLS, a BLUE-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD ,
five RED CROSSBILLS, a singing OLIVE WARBLER, and four
pairs of YELLOW-EYED JUNCOS.
The Hummingbird Festival at Lake Roberts has been
canceled this year.
In Hidalgo County:
SOW and HW in Clanton Canyon south of Animas saw GOULD’S
TURKEYS at Blair Well at the canyon mouth and at the Oak
Grove on May 1. A GREATER PEWEE was singing at the
Geronimo Seep on May 1.
They had an adult GRAY HAWK on the Diamond A Ranch land
on April 30 near Cloverdale. Don’t get an inch off the
road to look for it.
County Hwy.1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray)
Ranch. Because of events with thoughtless birders, one
must NOT go off the road.
In Doña Ana County:
JN on May 4 at the Mesilla Valley Bosque Park had a
a male ANNA’S HUMMINGBIRD.
At their home near Radium Springs MS recorded a pair of
HOODED OIOLES. The pair were still seen on May 2-3.
LS on May 10 still had the pair of HOODED ORIOLES at her
Las Cruces home.
In Otero County:
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo the lakes are open
to birding, but permission is needed from Holloman AF
Base to bird the Lake G area to the north.
JN at the White Sands NM on May 7 saw CASSIN’S VIREO,
SCOTT’S ORIOLE, and a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW.
In Eddy County:
At Rattlesnake Springs SW on May 3 found the GRAY HAWK.
JL on May 6 had a female KENTUCKY WARBLER at the springs
and an INDIGO BUNTING. KSo on May 7 found the WORM-
EATING WARBLER along the stream across from the rest-
rooms, and a WHITE-EYED VIREO by the ditch. On May 8
there was a VARIED BUNTING male on the fence along the
ditch. LG and AMa on May 11 had a ROSE-BREASTED
GROSBEAK. At the adjacent Washington Ranch JL
on May 6 found there was a CANVASBACK and LUCY’S WARBLER.

Field Trips:
Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips.
On Saturday, May 17, for Migratory Bird Day Hart Schwarz
will lead a hike into Pinyon Canyon in the Los Pinos Mts.
Trip is free, but reservations are required. To reserve
phone 505-864-4021. Trip starts at the Sevilleta NR
visitor center.
On Saturday, May 17, Central Audubon will check out the
Quarai Ruins led by Cole Wolf and Jim Mosley. For
information call Cole at 505-553-4831.
On Saturday, May 24, Mesilla Valley Audubon will explore
around the homes for migrants in Mesilla at the Dam,
canals, and driveways to Mesilla Park. Contact is David
Griffin at 575-382-2080.
Sunday, May 25, Central Audubon will bird Orilla Verde
near Pilar. Contact is Jerry Friedman at 505-753-1946.
The Rio Grande Nature Center in Albuquerque has Saturday
and Sunday morning hikes at 8:30 a.m. through May. There
is a parking fee.
The Randall Davey Audubon Center in Santa Fe on Upper
Canyon Road has Saturday morning bird walks beginning at
8:30 until 9:30.
