This is the New Mexico Rare Bird Report for August 23, 2010, sponsored by 
the New Mexico Ornithological Society.  When phone numbers are given for 
private property, please call before going to ask for permission.  In 
ranch country, do not stray off the roads.  

Highlights: Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, Tricolored Heron

CHAVES County:
On a survey at Bitter Lake NWR August 18, JS had a BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 
WHIMBREL, and the continuing TRICOLORED HERON.  

EDDY County:
SC had two GRAY HAWKS, one adult and an immature, at Rattlesnake Springs 
August 17.  MB and NP had a COMMON-GROUND DOVE August 15. 
 
GUADALUPE County:
BW and JNM had a NORTHERN PARULA at mm 5 on hwy 91 south of Santa Rosa 
August 18. 

HIDALGO County: 
In the New Mexico portion of Guadalupe Canyon, MT and BT had a NORTHERN 
PARULA, one THICK-BILLED KINGBIRD, and a COMMON-GROUND DOVE  


**Private land owners in Hidalgo County do not allow for birding on their 
property, so one must stay only on public roads there except in the 
Coronado National Forest or as explained in the New Mexico Bird Finding 
Guide.

OTERO County: 
One can walk past the gate to Stinky Lake at the Holloman Lakes, but not 
drive in and can still bird there.  MT on June 3 reported Lagoon G still 
closed, with many of the salt cedars removed.  
 
ROOSEVELT County:
CB had a HOODED WARBLER and a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER at the Melrose Trap 
August 19. 

SIERRA County:
CR had an immature YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON at North Monticello Point, 
Elephant Butte SP, August 14.  JP had the continuing BROWN PELICANS at 
North Monticello Point August 21. 

JP and BW had a SANDERLING on Long Point, Elephant Butte Lake SP, August 
21. 

VALENCIA County:
DP reported a LITTLE BLUE HERON at Belen Marsh August 20.  A search on the 
night of the 20th did not turn up the bird but I could be in the area.

Field Trips: 

AUGUST 26
Sulfur and La Cienega Canyons in the Sandias with Sally Burke, 792-1788.
Meet at 8:00 a.m. at the Four Hills shopping center on Central and west of 
Tramway, near the Hollywood Video to car pool. Very little walking 
involved. (Parking fee or pass required.)

The Rio Grande Nature Center has morning bird walks on Sunday and Saturday 
mornings at 8:00 a.m. from the pond at the parking lot.  

From May on there will be Tuesday morning bird walks in the Sandias by the 
Forest Service.  Meet at the Ranger Station in Tijeras at 8AM.
