coverage: northern Nevada and adjacent California

Hello, birders this is Greg Scyphers with the Lahontan Audubon Society Bird
Alert covering northern Nevada and adjacent California for Frinday,
December 21, 2001. (All locations are for the Reno area unless otherwise
noted.)

Keeping consistent with the reports from north neighboring states, Nevada
now has it's own reports of Common Redpoll. The apparent invasion up north
has reached northern Nevada. A Redpoll was seen on the 17th at the feeder
of John Anderson in Mogul. The bird was never relocated. In Elko, another
Redpoll was seen at the feeder of Mark and Lois Ports on the 16th. This
bird was also only seen that day. I urge everyone with feeders to pay
close attention to the finches visiting, for there are bound to be more
reports of Redpolls before the winter is over.

Ted Floyd found a male Eurasian Wigeon at the Lakeside golf course during
the Reno CBC. The bird was on the same pond that it was on last year. I
don't have specific directions currently, but the course is closed so
walking the course shouldn't be a problem.

A Brown Thrasher was seen on Private Property in the Stillwater area of
Fallon during the past week.

On December 8th, Martin Meyers and Ted Floyd found a Blue-winged Teal at
Oxbow Nature Study Area in West Reno.

On December 21st, Jack Walters found a Yellow-billed Loon at Pyramid Lake
at Separator Point just north of Sutcliffe.

Bill and Beth Clark report finding a Harris' Sparrow at their feeder in
Minden on the 18th. If you are interested in seeing this bird you can
contact the Clarks at 775-782-5362.

On December 15th, Diane Horgan reports finding a flock of Grey-crowned
Rosy-finches on HWY 341 near Virginia City.

This concludes the bird sightings for this report.
