Greetings. This is the New York Rare Bird Alert for
Friday, April 11th, 2008 at 10:00 p.m. The highlights
of today's tape are BLACK BRANT, LITTLE BLUE HERON,
SHORT-EARED OWLS, BLACK-NECKED STILT, LOUISIANA
WATERTHRUSHES, WESTERN TANAGER, and VESPER SPARROW.
The BLACK BRANT, reported last week off Lemon Creek
Pier, Staten Island, was found Monday at nearby
Wolfe's Pond Park.
An early LITTLE BLUE HERON was seen last Sunday at
Terrell River County Park in East Moriches.
Six SHORT-EARED OWLS were reported this past week:
three at the Calverton Grasslands on Thursday, one on
Dune Road in Quogue on Tuesday, one at Jamaica Bay on
Wednesday, and the sixth at Hobart Beach on Eatons
Neck at Huntington Bay last Saturday.
A BLACK-NECKED STILT was seen on Monday in Westhampton
Dunes, north of Dune Road at Gunning Point, which lies
just east of Pike's Beach.
Three LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSHES were reported this week.
Two were found in Central Park: one in the Ramble and
another in the Loch. The third was found today in
Prospect Park, Brooklyn, at the circus tent southeast
of the lake.
The previously reported WESTERN TANAGER was still
present today in Central Park near the Winterdale
Arch. To reach this area from the West 81st Street
park entrance, take the path that goes slightly left
to the Arch, and search the viburnum and crabapple
trees in that vicinity. Also at Central Park today
was a VESPER SPARROW at the Grassy Knoll, which is
just north of the ballfields in the North Meadow.
This area can be accessed by entering the park at East
102nd Street and crossing the East Drive.
There was a good flight of land birds today as
reported from the outer beaches of Long Island,
through Prospect Park in Brooklyn, to Central Park in
Manhattan, with many EASTERN PHOEBES, GOLDEN-CROWNED
and RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, NORTHERN FLICKERS and
AMERICAN ROBINS reported. Four species of warbler
were noted: LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH, PINE WARBLER, PALM
WARBLER, and YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER.
Other interesting birds reported this past week were a
EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL at the Norman Levy Preserve
in Merrick, at the creek near the parking lot on
Sunday, a WILD TURKEY at Wertheim County Park near
Shirley on Sunday, an ICELAND GULL at the Iron Pier
Park in Calverton recently, an early SEMIPALMATED
PLOVER at Zachs Bay, Jones Beach today, three large
alcids at Robert Moses State Park in Fire Island today
(probably RAZORBILLS), a BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER at the
Wertheim Preserve on Sunday, and another GNATCATCHER
at Hempstead Lake State Park last Saturday.
To phone in reports on Long Island call Tony Lauro at
(631) 734-4126, or during the day except Sunday call
Tom Burke at (212) 297-4804. This service is
sponsored by the Linnaean Society of New York and the
National Audubon Society.
