[~BEGIN RBA TAPE~]

Greetings. This is the New York Rare Bird Alert for Friday, June 27th at 8:00
pm. The highlights of today's tape are ARCTIC TERNS; MANX, GREATER, SOOTY, and
CORY'S SHEARWATERS; LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, WILSON'S PHALAROPE, and CASPIAN
TERNS.

Eastern Long Island continues to provide interesting birds, with a visit to
Cupsogue County Park in West Hampton Dunes last Saturday demonstrating this
productivity. On the flats just north of the parking lot Saturday morning two
ARCTIC TERNS were found, one in first summer 'portlandica' plumage, the other in
second summer plumage. These terns stayed through the high tide into late
afternoon before departing. Also visiting these flats were a ROYAL TERN, a few
ROSEATE TERNS, and five BLACK TERNS, while an interesting variety of shorebirds
included a LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER in breeding plumage. An ocean watch from the
boardwalk early Saturday produced 4+ GREATER SHEARWATERS, following 2 offshore
draggers and 15+ WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS, while a late afternoon watch added 3
CORY'S and 2 MANX SHEARWATERS. NORTHERN GANNETS were also continuing to move
steadily, all immatures. At the same location Sunday and Monday a MANX
SHEARWATER was seen, and a WESTERN
WILLET appeared Monday on the flats. Wednesday evening's surprise on the
Cupsogue flats was a WILSON'S PHALAROPE, and Friday added another first summer
ARCTIC TERN and 2 ROYAL TERNS, 1 FORSTER'S TERN, 3 ROSEATE TERNS, and 4 BLACK
TERNS. Shorebirds today featured the lingering LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER and
WESTERN WILLET, and 2 more CORY'S SHEARWATERS were spotted offshore. Also on
Friday from Pikes Beach just east of Cupsogue, 2 adult SANDWICH TERNS were
reported in the morning. Cupsogue is a county park, and a fee is charge to
non-county residents.

Further east in the Montauk area, a birder camping at Hither Hills State Park
had a nice run of pelagics. Starting on Tuesday morning, counts offshore from
Hither Hills included 55 CORY'S, 2 GREATER and 4 MANX SHEARWATERS, and a
PARASITIC JAEGER. Morning and evening watches on Thursday combined for peaks of
 35 CORY'S, 4 GREATER, 1 SOOTY, and 4 MANX SHEARWATERS, plus 4 ROYAL TERNS.
Many of these birds were concentrated around an offshore feeding frenzy and were
constantly visible from shore. Friday morning's count tallied 48 CORY'S, 1
GREATER and 3 MANX SHEARWATERS, and also 5 PARASITIC JAEGERS, this a rather
interesting late June appearance for this species here.

Last Sunday a few CORY'S SHEARWATERS were also reported off Tobay and Robert
Moses State Park. It's possible that any site with a good view of the ocean
could produce pelagics, but probably the farther east you go, the better.

At Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, where we have been assured that the water level
is being lowered on the East Pond, on Saturday a GULL-BILLED TERN was present
along the south side of the West Pond, and from a boat in the bay, 6 CASPIAN
TERNS were found on one of the islands.

Reported in Central Park last Saturday were such presumed floaters as VEERY,
NORTHERN PARULA, PRAIRIE WARBLER and MOURNING WARBLER.

To phone in reports on Long Island call Tony Lauro at (631) 734-4126, or
weekdays call Tom Burke at (212) 297-4804. This service is sponsored by the
Linnaean Society of New York and the National Audubon Society. Thank you for
calling. [~ END TAPE ~]
