[~BEGIN RBA TAPE~]

Greetings. This is the New York Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, July 3rd at 6:00
pm. The highlights of today's tape are BLACK-NECKED STILT; SANDWICH, CASPIAN,
and GULL-BILLED TERNS; and CORY'S and GREATER SHEARWATERS.

A BLACK-NECKED STILT, first spotted at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge last Friday,
was still present at least through Wednesday, but we have not heard any reports
from today. The stilt has been staying around the southwest corner of the West
Pond, usually walking around among the geese and ducks gathered there. A
GULL-BILLED TERN was seen both Saturday and Sunday around the marsh, south of
the West Pond, with a second appearing briefly Sunday morning, and a CASPIAN
TERN flew over the West Pond Sunday morning. Most of the herons are also in
evidence around the West Pond. The East Pond at the Bay is lowering slowly.
With hardly any edge on Sunday, there were five LESSER and two GREATER
YELLOWLEGS around the Raunt. The immature BARN OWLS also continue in the box at
Big John's Pond, but perhaps not for much longer. Enjoy them by looking from
the blind at the owl box across the Pond.

Out at Cupsogue County Park in West Hampton Dunes, two more SANDWICH TERNS
appeared on the flats on Sunday afternoon, followed by another on Tuesday.
Other terns appearing there lately have included ROYAL, with three also at
adjacent Pikes Beach Tuesday; two or more BLACKS; a FORSTER'S; and a few
ROSEATES among the many COMMON TERNS, and fewer LEAST TERNS and BLACK SKIMMERS.
No ARCTIC TERNS were noted this week so far. The flats are located north of
the large parking lot, and an entry fee is charged to non-county residents. The
best time to be there appears to be on the rising tide.

As for ocean-watching, sea hazes played a part recently, but last Saturday three
CORY'S SHEARWATERS were seen off Cupsogue, and this evening a GREATER
SHEARWATER was spotted sitting on the ocean off the Cupsogue boardwalk.

And lest we forget the land birds: a few floaters should be about, like the
WORM-EATING WARBLER at Fort Tilden Tuesday, or the YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO in
Central Park last Saturday.

To phone in reports on Long Island call Tony Lauro at (631) 734-4126, or
weekdays call Tom Burke at (212) 297-4804. This service is sponsored by the
Linnaean Society of New York and the National Audubon Society. Thank you for
calling. [~ END TAPE ~]
