[~BEGIN RBA TAPE~]
Greetings. This is the New York Rare Bird Alert for Friday, July 18th at 10:00
pm. The highlights of today's tape are ARCTIC TERN, MANX and CORY'S
SHEARWATERS, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, and migrant shorebirds.
Though it's getting late in the ARCTIC TERN season, one or two were still being
seen last weekend out in West Hampton Dunes. On both Saturday and Sunday, a
first summer 'portlandica' ARCTIC TERN, apparently different birds, appeared on
the sandbar at Pike's Beach with an adult ARCTIC also reported Saturday morning
though seen only briefly at Cupsogue County Park just west of Pike's. Other
terns at these sites included two slightly molted adult BLACK TERNS, a ROYAL
TERN, a few ROSEATE TERNS, and a FORSTER'S TERN. Numbers of migrant shorebirds
were also present there, though no unexpected ones, with large numbers of
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS and SEMIPALMATED and LEAST SANDPIPERS making up most of
the migrants, joined by some LESSER YELLOWLEGS, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, a few RED
KNOT, a WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER Sunday and smaller numbers of other early
migrants. Thirty-nine PIPING PLOVERS were also counted at Pike's on Sunday.
Pelagics seen off Cupsogue County Park were few, with Saturday producing two
CORY'S SHEARWATERS and a very distant MANX SHEARWATER, plus a few NORTHERN
GANNETS.
At Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge the East Pond remains fairly high, but a walk to
the Raunt on Sunday did produce hundreds of SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, both
YELLOWLEGS, and numbers of SEMIPALMATED and LEAST SANDPIPERS. During the week a
few STILT SANDPIPERS also showed up on the East Pond, and decent numbers of
shorebirds continue to use the south end of the West Pond, though visibility can
be more difficult there because the vegetation around the edge has not been
mowed. If visiting the Visitors Center after going to the East Pond, keep
mentioning that the water level needs to come for the shorebirds until it does
reach the appropriate level.
Out in Calverton the pair of RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS continues in the oak wood
lot at the intersection of River Road and Old River Road, next to the entrance
to the Swan Lake Golf Club. Nesting has not been confirmed yet, but please do
not disturb these birds.
Among the land bird migrants recently have been BANK SWALLOW, CLIFF SWALLOW, and
BOBOLINK.
For the next two weeks the Rare Bird Alert will be handled by Tony Lauro.
Please contact Tony with your reports at (631) 734-4126. This service is
sponsored by the Linnaean Society of New York and the National Audubon Society.
Thank you for calling. [~ END TAPE ~]
