Wednesday night, January 24. This is the Oklahoma Rare Bird Alert. If you
have a message to leave, wait for the tone at the end of this report.
Please leave your name and telephone number.
A third-winter LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was observed with hundreds of
Ring-billed and Herring Gulls on the Arkansas River Wednesday afternoon
west of the intersections of SH51 & SH97 in Sand Springs, Tulsa County.
There is a pull off west of the sand and gravel company driveway on SH51.
Walk across the tracks to scan the river. A first-winter GLAUCOUS GULL and
a FRANKLIN'S GULL in breeding plumage was at this location also. This is
apparently a second Glaucous Gull in the area this past week since the
plumage is paler than the first one reported on January 13 and January 21.
An all white gull with a dark eye flying near the Keystone Dam gave a
birder cause to take a longer look. It was smaller than the Herring Gulls
harassing this gull for its fish; however, a look through a scope showed
the gull had yellow legs and feet, a yellow bill with a black ring. The
only dark spot on the gull was a faint black mark at the top of the
forehead. The shape of the head and the bill were consistent with the
nearby Ring-billed Gulls.
On February 28, this rare bird alert will cease to exist due to the fact
that no reports of rare birds have been received for over two months. Most
reports are posted to the ListServ.
This concludes this report
Thank you for calling and good birding!.
