This is the Berks County Birding Hotline for Monday, March 5th.
Highlights include: EURASIAN WIGEON and PINEE WARBLER.

Blackbirds - both COMMON GRACKLES and RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS have moved
into the area in good numbers. A lot of waterfowl are also here. The
peak for SNOW GEESE is a little past but there are still a lot in thee
area. On the 27th at Lake Ontelaunee there were 2500 SNOW GEESE, 12
RING-NECKED DUCKS, 2 REDHEADS and some AMERICAN WIGEON. On the 28th at
Blue Marsh there were 500 SNOW GEESE and 300 COMMON MERGANSERS. At lake
Ontelaunee there were 4 BUFFLEHEADS, 21 AMERICAN WIGEON, 50 NORTHERN
PINTAILS, 2 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 3 HOODED MERGANSERS, 35 COMMON
MERGANSERS and 5000 SNOW GEEESE.

On March 1st at Blue Marsh there were 100 COMMON MERGANSERS, a TUNDRA
SWAN flying over, and the NORTHERN SHRIKE in the usual location off of
Bright School Rd. To get to this location turn onto Bright School Rd
from Rte 183 just north of the Sheidy boat launch. Park in the lot on
the left side at the top of the hill and walk down the access road on
the right side of Bright School Rd. When you get to the bottom of the
hill go to the left, around a field and look in the hedgerow for thee
shrike. A NORTHERN HARRIER was also seen there. At Lake Ontelaunee
there were 2000 SNOW GEESE, 5 AMERICAN WIGEON, 2 NORTHERN PINTAILS, and
5 WOOD DUCKS.

On the 2nd at Blue Marsh there was an immature BALD EAGLE, 300 COMMON
MERGANSERS, 8 HOODED MERGANSERS, 8 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 1 MUTE SWAN, and
1 NORTHERN HARRIER. The shrike was not seen. On the 3rd at Glen Morgan
Lake there was an adult BALD EAGLE, 68 TUNDRA SWANS, 3 MUTE SWANS, 200
SNOW GEESE flying over, 200 CANADA GEESE on thee lake, 2 WOOD DUCKS, 3
REDHEADS, 5 RUDDY DUCKS, 19 HOODED MERGANSERS, 94 COMMON MERGANSERS,
100 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 2 GADWALL, 4 BUFFLEHEADS, 8 GREEN-WINGED TEAL,
49 CANVASBACKS, 26 AMERICAN WIGEON, 1 female GREATER SCAUP, 2 NORTHERN
PINTAILS, 1 AMERICAN COOT and lots of gulls including 1 LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULL. At Green Hills Lake there was a singing Pine Warbler
in a Virginia Pine, setting a new early spring record for Berks County.
At Lake Ontelaunee there was a EURASIAN WIGEON, 83 AMERICAN WIGEON, 110
NORTHERN PINTAILS, 6 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 1 COMMON  GOLDENEYE, 20 COMMON
MERGANSERS, about 4000 SNOW GEESE, a HORNED GREBE, a RUDDY DUCK, a
BUFFLEHEAD and 3 HOODED MERGANSERS.
