Welcome to Pennsylvania Audubon's and the Patriot-News' Birdline. This
Birdline covers sightings made primarily during the week prior to
Thursday, March 13, 2007.
The spring migration is now well underway. There were numerous reports
from across the region of migrating flocks of SNOW-GEESE, CANADA GEESE,
TUNDRA SWANS, various common duck species, AMERICAN ROBINS, RED-WINGED
BLACKBIRDS and COMMON GRACKLES last week, too many to report
individually. Now is the time to check out your favorite water spots and
fields if you are interested in seeing these species in migration.
BEDFORD COUNTY:
There were 17 FOX SPARROWS in an Everett yard on March 8 (LJ).
BLAIR COUNTY:
The feeding station at Canoe Creek State Park attracted 2 FOX SPARROWS
on March 8 (DWi).
CAMERON COUNTY:
Sinnemahoning State Park produced 2 HERMIT THRUSHES and 2 SWAMP SPARROWS
on March 8 (MJ).
CENTRE COUNTY:
Tussey Mountain Hawk Watch reported counting 2 BLACK VULTURES, 26 TURKEY
VULTURES, 8 BALD EAGLES, 2 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 7 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS,
30 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 2 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, 25 GOLDEN EAGLES and 1
AMERICAN KESTREL between March 6 and 9 (TM).
There were 2 WILSON'S SNIPE at Millbrook Marsh on March 7 (JV).
An EASTERN PHOEBE was found along Masseyburg Road near Hutchinson Pond
on March 7 (JK).
Birds observed from Howard between March 8 and 9 included 1 BALD EAGLE,
1 FOX SPARROW, 5 COMMON REDPOLLS and 1 PINE SISKIN (BSn).
A CACKLLING GOOSE was seen at Bald Eagle State Park on March 8 (TA).
A CACKLING GOOSE, possibly the same one as seen at Bald Eagle State
Park, was found in Curtin Wetlands on March 9 (WL).
A total of 19 EVENING GROSBEAKS visited the Ramsey's feeders on March 9
(LR).
A FOX SPARROW showed up at a Boalsburg yard on March 10 (AMa).
CLEARFIELD COUNTY:
Feeders in Houtzdale attracted 40 COMMON REDPOLLS and 6 PINE SISKINS on
March 7 (CC).
CUMBERLAND COUNTY:
The PRAIRIE FALCON continues to be observed at the intersection of Mud
Level and Duncan Roads through March 10 (AM, MS). A GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was also seen in a nearby field on March 10 (AM).
DAUPHIN COUNTY:
A RED-NECKED GREBE was seen in the Susquehanna River from Riverfront
Park in Millersburg on March 7 (JS).
AMERICAN WOODCOCK were heard displaying in a field near Hummelstown on
March 7 (SZ).
There were 3 WHITE-WINGED SCOTER among the waterfowl in the Susquehanna
River near West Fairview on March 8 and 9 (CK, HP, PR, RS, DW).
ELK COUNTY:
A PINE SISKIN was seen on March 5 at a feeder in Bennetts Valley along
Route 555 about 0.2 miles south of Grey Hill Road (JG).
JUNIATA COUNTY:
A light morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen along Cedar Springs Road on
March 8 (CK, HP, PR, RS).
LANCASTER COUNTY:
Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area produced up to 110,000 SNOW GEESE
(3.12 PA Game Com. est.), 3 ROSS' GEESE, 2 CACKLING GEESE, 3,100 TUNDRA
SWANS (3.12 PA Game Com. est.), 4 BALD EAGLES and 5 SHORT-EARED OWL
between March 6 and 12 (AH, DK, CK, HP, PR, RS, CR, DJ, ASc, ASt, JD,
ME).
Among the birds found at Octoraro Lake on March 6 were 4 BALD EAGLES and
1 BARRED OWL (PF).
A PEREGRINE FALCON was hunting around the Wood's Edge housing complex
along Centerville Road on March 10 (ML).
LEBANON COUNTY:
A PEREGRINE FALCON was observed along East Ridge Road on March 6 (GK).
LUZERNE COUNTY:
A couple of FOX SPARROWS were spotted at the feeding station in
Nescopeck State Park on March 9 (KP).
LYCOMING COUNTY:
A COMMON REDPOLL visited a Warrensville yard on March 10 (RL).
MCKEAN COUNTY:
Four BALD EAGLES and 1 GOLDEN EAGLE were seen flying over Bradford on
March 9 (JF).
PERRY COUNTY:
A BALD EAGLE was seen near the Watts Exit off of Routes 11/15 (CK, HP,
PR, RS).
A FOX SPARROW visited a yard outside of New Bloomfield on March 9 (BFi).
SUSQUEHANNA COUNTY:
Up to 150 COMMON REDPOLLS and 1 HOARY REDPOLL continue to visit feeders
through March 12 at Milk Can Corner (HF). A NORTHERN SHRIKE also put in
an appearance on March 10 and 11 (HF).
TIOGA COUNTY:
An immature and an adult BALD EAGLE were seen at Cowanesque Lake on
March 10 (JH).
One adult BALD EAGLE was observed at Hammond Lake on March 10 (JH).
YORK COUNTY:
A NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL was found sitting in the middle of a road north
of Wrightsville off U.S. 30 on the evening of March 5 (SW, BF).
There were 2 immature BALD EAGLES at Codorus State Park on March 6 (AP).
Three immature BALD EAGLES were seen along Shenks Ferry Road on March 7
(BF).
A SHORT-EARED OWL was observed on March 9 near the old landfill along
Plank Road near Shrewsbury (DC).
