Welcome to Pennsylvania Audubon's and the Patriot-News' Birdline. This
Birdline covers sightings made primarily during the week prior to
Thursday, March 27, 2007.
The spring migration is now well underway. There were numerous reports
from across the region of migrating flocks of SNOW-GEESE, CANADA GEESE,
TUNDRA SWANS, various common duck species, AMERICAN ROBINS, RED-WINGED
BLACKBIRDS and COMMON GRACKLES last week, too many to report
individually. Now is the time to check out your favorite water spots and
fields if you are interested in seeing these species in migration.
BRADFORD COUNTY:
Two SHORT-EARED OWLS were found in Columbia Township on March 22 (JH).
CAMERON COUNTY:
A PINE WARBLER visited feeders in Driftwood on March 20 (MJ).
CENTRE COUNTY:
Tussey Mountain Hawk Watch reported counting 2 BALD EAGLES, 2 NORTHERN
HARRIERS, 1 SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, 1 COOPER'S HAWK, 12 RED-TAILED HAWKS and
5 GOLDEN EAGLES on March 21 and 23 (NB). Three SANDHILL CRANES also flew
over the site on March 23 (NB).
Two adult BALD EAGLES were seen flying together over the lake at Bald
Eagle State Park on March 20 (BSn). One RED-THROATED LOON and 1 BALD
EAGLE were present between March 21 and 22 (MH, GY, SY).
A SURF SCOTER was found at Toftrees pond on March 20 (MB).
A COMMON REDPOLL visited a feeder in State College on March 22 and 23
(JC).
Up to 5 COMMON REDPOLLS visited feeders in Howard between March 22 and
23 (BSn).
A BALD EAGLE was observed feeding on a deer carcass along Route 550 near
the Centre/Huntingdon line on March 24 (KE).
CUMBERLAND COUNTY:
Mud Level Road produced 7 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS and 67 WILSON'S SNIPE on
March 19 (AM).
A FOX SPARROW visited feeders in Middlesex Township along LeTort Spring
Run on March 23 and 24 while TREE SWALLOWS were observed for the first
time this year on March 23 (HW).
State Game Lands 169 produced 1 AMERICAN BITTERN and 3 BLACK-CROWNED
NIGHT HERONS along Cabin road on March 25 (VG).
DAUPHIN COUNTY:
The previously reported BLACK-HEADED GULL continued to be seen through
March 24 in the Susquehanna River near Marysville (CR, PR). At least 2
LITTLE GULLS were seen from this location on March 21 (RK).
The Susquehanna River between West Fairview and Marysville produced 3
WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, 2 RED-NECKED GREBES and 4 LITTLE GULLS on March 22
(RK).
An early BLACK-CROWN NIGHT HERON was observed on March 23 at Wildwood
Lake Nature Preserve in northern Harrisburg (JS).
Two PINE WARBLERS were found on the Hotel Hershey grounds on March 24
(GK).
FRANKLIN COUNTY:
There were 9 EASTERN PHOEBES in Stillhouse Hollow on March 23 and
feeders in the hollow attracted 1 PINE WARBLER, FOX SPARROWS and 1 PINE
SISKIN (BK).
HUNTINGDON COUNTY:
A MERLIN was observed in Smithfield on March 23 (AW).
JUNIATA COUNTY:
There were 2 BALD EAGLES along the Juniata River near Locust Run on
March 21 (TP).
A BALD EAGLE flew over Oakland Mills on March 21 and an immature BALD
EAGLE was seen near the village on March 25 (AT, CK).
An immature BALD EAGLE was seen flying over the Lewistown Narrows of the
Juniata River near Arch Rock exit on March 23 (CK).
A BALD EAGLE was perched along the road near Evandale on March 25 (GG).
LANCASTER COUNTY:
Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area produced up to 100,000 SNOW GEESE
and 3 BALD EAGLES between March 21 and (DD, DK).
At least 4 LITTLE GULLS were seen among around 400 BONAPARTE'S GULLS
along the Susquehanna River between Wrightsville and Long Level on March
22 (EW).
An adult BALD EAGLE was observed flying just south of Manheim near the
intersection of Auction and Erisman roads on March 24 (KS).
Conejohela Flats produced 5 LITTLE GULLS, 1 GLAUCOUS GULL and 1 LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULL on March 25 (CR, AMc, DW).
LYCOMING COUNTY:
A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was observed on March 24 with a flock of
CANADA GEESE in a field near a farm pond along Elimsport Road about 4.6
miles west from its intersection with Route 15 (MBa).
PERRY COUNTY:
An adult BALD EAGLE was observed on a nest along the Juniata River near
Newport on March 23 (MBr).
SUSQUEHANNA COUNTY:
A NORTHERN SHRIKE continues to visit the property on a daily basis
through March 20 (HF). At least 13 COMMON REDPOLLS also continue to
visit the feeders through March 25 (HF).
TIOGA COUNTY:
At least 12 BALD EAGLES were seen around Hammond Lake on March 22 (JH).
One BALD EAGLE was observed at Tioga Lake on March 22 (JH).
YORK COUNTY:
Nesting BALD EAGLES were seen at Codorus State Park on March 23 (AP).
One adult and 2 immature BALD EAGLES were observed on March 24 at Lake
Marburg in the park (BM).
