Welcome to Pennsylvania Audubon's and the Patriot-News' Birdline. This
Birdline covers sightings made primarily during the week prior to
Thursday, April 17, 2007.
Reports for a variety of duck species, Common Loons and various grebes
were numerous and most large bodies of water produced good numbers of
these species. The shorebird and warbler migration is picking up.
ADAMS COUNTY:
A PROTHONOTARY WARBLER, a few YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS and 1 PALM WARBLER
were observed in State Game Lands 249 on April 12 (MO).
BEDFORD COUNTY:
There were 4 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS and 4 PINE WARBLERS at Shawnee State
Park on April 13 (JT).
BLAIR COUNTY:
A RED-NECKED GREBE was seen at Canoe Lake on April 10 (DWi).
CAMERON COUNTY:
Up to 24 EVENING GROSBEAKS continue to visit feeders near Emporium
through April 13 (MJ).
CAMBRIA COUNTY:
A NORTHERN SHRIKE continues to be observed at Prince Gallitzin State
Park through April 10 (JS).
CARBON COUNTY:
A few PALM WARBLERS and 12 LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSHES were located along
the Lehigh Gorge trail on April 12 (AS).
One SURF SCOTER was seen at Beltzville State Park on April 12 (DWe).
A TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was observed between April 13 and 15 at a
location that the owner's requested not be disclosed (BR, RR).
CENTRE COUNTY:
There were 2 PINE SISKINS feeding on catkins at Scotia Pond on April 10
(GG). Eight YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS and 9 PINE WARBLERS were seen at
Scotia Barrens on April 12 (JK).
Colyer Lake produced 2 immature BALD EAGLES and 1 GRASSHOPPER SPARROW on
April 10 (NK). A drake SURF SCOTER was present on April 12 (MH). A
LINCOLN'S SPARROW was found on April 15 (JV).
A BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER was observed on April 11 in the Little
Juniata Natural Area (SK).
Tussy Mountain Hawk Watch tabulated 12 TURKEY VULTURE, 14 OSPREY, 2 BALD
EAGLES, 3 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 9 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 6 COOPER'S HAWKS, 27
BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 18 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 1 GOLDEN EAGLE, 2 AMERICAN
KESTRELS and 1 MERLIN between April 11 and 12 (NB).
There were up to 3 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS at Toftrees Pond between April
12 and 16 (DF, JV). One SOLITARY SANDPIPER was present on April 16 (JV).
Bald Eagle State Park produced 1 WHITE-WINGED SCOTER and chicks in the
BALD EAGLE nest on April 13 (AW, SP). There were 5 GREATER YELLOWLEGS
and 1 LESSER YELLOWLEGS at the Dowdy Hole access area on April 15 (GG).
CLEARFIELD COUNTY:
There were at least 3 PINE WARBLERS at Parker Dam State Park on April 10
(JG).
CUMBERLAND COUNTY:
Colonel Denning State Park produced a LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH on April 11
(VG).
Birds found on April 13 along the Sunset Rocks/Appalachian Trail loop
along Tom's Run in Michaux State Forest included YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER
and PINE WARBLER (CB).
There were 1 NORTHERN PARULA, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, 2 PINE WARBLERS, 2
PALM WARBLERS and 1 LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH around Messiah College on
April 15 (CR).
Several HORNED LARKS and a flock of AMERICAN PIPITS were observed on
April 15 along Mud Level Road (DR).
DAUPHIN COUNTY:
Among the birds visiting feeders at Blue Mountain Parkway near
Linglestown on April 10 were PINE WARBLER, FOX SPARROW, 60 COMMON
REDPOLLS and PINE SISKINS (MB, RB).
A LITTLE GULL was seen along with 225 BONAPARTE'S GULLS in the
Susquehanna River near Marysville on April 11 (JK). Another LITTLE GULL
was seen among a flock of 45 BONAPARTE'S GULLS on April 15 (CR, JSh).
Two YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS were observed in the Bellview Park area
of Harrisburg on April 12 (CB).
ELK COUNTY:
Birds found around Halton on April 16 included 1 BLACK-THROATED GREEN
WARBLER and a flock of PURPLE FINCHES (FM).
FRANKLIN COUNTY:
Three PURPLE FINCHES visited feeders in Chambersburg on April 13 (BO).
A GREATER YELLOWLEGS and 1 WILSON'S SNIPE were found on April 13 at
Dennis Creek Wetland near the intersection of Ft. McCord and Burkett
Roads (BO).
HUNTINGDON COUNTY:
A DUNLIN was seen at Lake Perez on April 14 (JK).
A PINE SISKIN was at Shaver's Creek Nature Preserve on April 16 (DWen).
JUNIATA COUNTY:
An OSPREY, 1 BALD EAGLE and 1 possible MERLIN were observed on April 10
along the Juniata River near the Mifflintown River Access (CK).
PINE SISKINS continue to visit the Troyer's feeders at Lost Creek Shoe
Shop through at least April 14 and good numbers of PURPLE FINCHES were
present on April 15 (AT). A SHORT-EARED OWL was observed flying over
nearby fields on April 15 (AT).
An AMERICAN BITTERN was found on April 14 and 15 at Kratzer Wetlands off
Cuba Mills Road (AT, DT, ST, AnT, CK).
A PHILADELPHIA VIREO was seen between Van Wert and East Salem on April
14 (EP).
LANCASTER COUNTY:
A PINE WARBLER was seen on April 10 near Bird in Hand (DW).
One BALD EAGLE, 3 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 2 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLES, 4 PINE
WARBLERS, 14 PALM WARBLERS and 2 LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSHES were at Middle
Creek Wildlife Propagation Area between April 11 and 13 (ME, DW).
Two NORTHERN PARULAS and 1 LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH were found near
Holtwood Dam on April 12 (JSm).
Four BALD EAGLES were seen at Octoraro Reservoir on April 12 or 13 (DS).
A PALM WARBLER was seen along Pumping Station Road on April 12 or 13
(DS).
Conoy Canal Park produced 1 YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER and 7 PALM WARBLERS
on April 14 (DH).
One GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 2 LITTLE GULLS and 250 BOBAPARTE'S GULLS were
seen on April 14 along the Susquehanna River at Falmouth (DH).
LEBANON COUNTY:
Second Mountain Hawk Watch reported counting 38 OSPREY, 1 BALD EAGLE, 12
NORTHERN HARRIERS, 64 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 20 COOPER'S HAWKS, 2
RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, 70 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 21 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 1
GOLDEN EAGLE, 83 AMERICAN KESTRELS, 9 MERLINS and 1 PEREGRINE FALCON
between April 10 and 11 (MB, RB, MC).
Memorial Lake in Fort Indiantown Gap produced 1 calling NORTHERN
SAW-WHET OWL (near middle parking lot) and 12 PINE WARBLERS on April 12
(RM, MC).
Birds seen in State Game Lands 145 on April 13 included 1 MISSISSIPPI
KITE, 3 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, 4 PINE WARBLERS, 1 PALM WARBLER and 1
LINCOLN'S SPARROW (RM).
Five PURPLE FINCHES visited feeders in North Londondary Township on
April 15 (GK).
MIFFLIN COUNTY:
Some of the birds found along Stillhouse Hollow Road on April 12
included 1 RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, 3 LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSHES and 1 FOX
SPARROW (JD).
PERRY COUNTY:
Two PURPLE FINCHES visited feeders in New Bloomfield on April 10 (SA).
SCHUYKILL/BERKS COUNTIES:
Hawk Mountain Hawk Watch reported counting 6 BLACK VULTURES, 14 TURKEY
VULTURES, 38 OSPREY, 2 BALD EAGLE, 9 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 52 SHARP-SHINNED
HAWKS, 26 COOPER'S HAWKS, 1 NORTHERN GOSHAWK, 1 RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 99
BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 42 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 28 AMERICAN KESTRELS and 5
MERLINS between April 10 and 15 (LG).
YORK COUNTY:
Pinchot State Park produced 1 NORTHERN PARULA WARBLER, 1 YELLOW WARBLER,
9 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, 1 BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, 2 PRAIRIE
WARBLERS and 1 WORM-EATING WARBLER on April 12 (BH).
A PALM WARBLER was seen on April 16 at Condors State Park near the
sailboat day use area off Smith Station Road (DRi).
