Welcome to Pennsylvania Audubon's and the Patriot-News' Birdline. This
Birdline covers sightings made primarily during the week prior to
Thursday, April 24, 2007.
The passerine migration is now well under way. Most woodlands are now
reporting vireos, thrushes and all the "common" warblers. Its time to
check out your woodlots! Only the rarer species are reported below.
CAMERON COUNTY:
A flock of up to 24 EVENING GROSBEAKS continues to visit feeders near
Emporium through at least April 20 (MJ).
CARBON COUNTY:
A MERLIN was seen flying over Mauch Chunk State Park on April 20 (DK).
CENTRE COUNTY:
The Brandes' feeders attracted 5 PURPLE FINCHES on April 19 (HB).
Tussey Mountain Hawk Watch reported tabulating 6 OSPREY, 1 BALD EAGLE, 3
NORTHERN HARRIERS, 9 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 1 COOPER'S HAWK, 108
BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 5 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 1 AMERICAN KESTREL and 1 MERLIN
on April 19 (NB).
A flock of 12 PURPLE FINCHES visited the Bryant's feeders on April 20
and 21 (DB).
CUMBERLAND COUNTY:
A singing PROTHONOTARY WARBLER was found along Yellow Breeches Creek at
Messiah College on April 33 (CR).
DAUPHIN COUNTY:
A MISSISSIPPI KITE was seen flying over Harrisburg on April 18 (DH).
A BALD EAGLE and 1 PEREGRINE FALCON were seen along the Susquehanna
River on April 20 between Wormleysburg and Marysville (CR, RK).
ELK COUNTY:
NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS were found in two unspecified breeding bird
survey blocks on the evening of April 21 (JF).
HUNTINGDON COUNTY:
PURPLE FINCH and PINE SISKIN were seen on April 23 at Shaver's Creek
Wildlife Preserve (DWe).
There were 3 YELLOW-THROATED WARBLERS and 2 CERULEAN WARBLERS along the
Alexander end of the Lower Trail on April 23 (AW).
LANCASTER COUNTY:
Conejohela Flats produced 2 AMERICAN BITTERNS, 3 GLOSSY IBIS, 7 BALD
EAGLES, 4 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 1 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 9 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS
and 5 WILSON'S SNIPE on April 16 (DH).
A MERLIN flew over a yard in the eastern part of the county on April 20
(CC).
There were 2 YELLOW-THROATED WARBLERS at Lancaster County Central Park
on April 20 (DW).
A YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER was found in the Safe Harbor area on April 23
(CC).
LEBANON COUNTY:
Up to 15 PURPLE FINCHES visited feeders located in the southern portion
of the county on April 17 (JH).
Second Mountain Hawk Watch reported counting 1 OSPREY, 1 BALD EAGLE, 1
NORTHERN HARRIER, 9 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 1 COOPER'S HAWKS, 41
BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 7 RED-TAILED HAWKS, and 6 AMERICAN KESTRELS on April
19 (MC).
LYCOMING COUNTY:
A adult BALD EAGLE was observed flying over Rose Valley Lake on April 20
(RL).
SCHUYKILL/BERKS COUNTIES:
Hawk Mountain Hawk Watch reported counting 1 BLACK VULTURE, 1 TURKEY
VULTURE, 13 OSPREY, 3 BALD EAGLES, 3 NORTHERN HARRIER, 10 SHARP-SHINNED
HAWKS, 5 COOPER'S HAWKS, 3 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, 77 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS,
8 RED-TAILED HAWKS and 5 AMERICAN KESTRELS between April 16 and 23 (LG).
SUSQUEHANNA COUNTY:
A PURPLE FINCH visited the feeders at Mild Can Corners on April 23 (HF).
