Welcome to Pennsylvania Audubon's and the Patriot-News' Birdline. This
Birdline covers sightings made primarily during the week prior to
Thursday, May 1, 2007.
The passerine migration is now well under way. Most woodlands are now
reporting vireos, thrushes and all the "common" warblers. Only the rarer
species are reported below. This week also saw the arrival of
Ruby-throated Hummingbirds over most of the region. Its time to set out
your sugar/nectar feeders.
ADAMS COUNTY:
State Game Lands 249 produced 8 warbler species and 4 PURPLE FINCHES on
April 26 (PR).
BLAIR COUNTY:
Four OSPREY were at Canoe Lake on April 24 (DW).
CAMERON COUNTY:
At least 12 EVENING GROSBEAKS continue to visit feeders in Emporium
through at least April 26 (MJ). Also, a walk around the area found LEAST
FLYCATCHER and ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK among the species observed on
April 26 (MJ).
CENTRE COUNTY:
Bald Eagle State Park produced 4 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS and 2 SPOTTED
SANDPIPERS on April 25 (JS). A GREATER YELLOWLEGS was present on April
29 (MO).
Two SPOTTED SANDPIPERS and 1 WILSON'S SNIPE were found at Toftrees Pond
on April 25 (JV). A MERLIN was present on April 26 (DF).
Tussey Mountain Hawk Watch reported counting 2 OSPREY, 1 BALD EAGLE, 5
SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 3 COOPER'S HAWKS, 7 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 7
RED-TAILED HAWKS and 1 AMERICAN KESTREL on April 26 (CW).
Colyer Lake produced 5 GREATER YELLOWLEGS and 2 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS on
April 26 (AW).
A flock of 41 WILLETS were observed at Julian Wetlands on April 28 (AW).
Two WILLETS were still present on the morning of April 29 (NB, GG).
An EVENING GROSBEAK came to the Ramsey's feeders on April 29 (LR).
There were 11 PURPLE FINCHES at Curtain Wetlands on April 29 (MO).
CLEARFIELD COUNTY:
A ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK and several PURPLE FINCHES visited feeders in
Houtzdale on April 27 (SB, MAB).
CLINTON COUNTY:
A LEAST FLYCATCHER was found along Carrier Road near Farrandsville on
April 27 (JS).
CUMBERLAND COUNTY:
A ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK came to feeders along Letort Drive in Carlisle
on April 25 (HW).
A raft trip down the Conodoguinet Creek on April 26 found 1
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON, 1 YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT HERON, 1 BALD EAGLE, 1
SOLITARY SANDPIPER, 3 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS and 1 PROTHONOTARY WARBLER
among the 84 total species observed (DH).
A BALD EAGLE, SOLITARY SANDPIPER, WILSON'S SNIPE and 3 NORTHERN
WATERTHRUSHES were observed among the species at Big Spring on April 26
(VG, BO).
A SNOWY EGRET was observed at Possum Lake on April 27 (MK).
A COMMON MOORHEN was foraging in the northwestern pond of State Game
Lands 169 on April 28 (AM, VG).
A YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER was seen along Yellow Breeches Creek at
Messiah College on April 29 (CR).
DAUPHIN COUNTY:
MYO Park in Millersburg yielded 1 SHOLITARY SANDPIPER and 1 NORTHERN
WATERTHRUSH on April 26 (BH, JH).
Stony Creek Valley produced 1 "BREWSTER'S WARBLER", 1 YELLOW-THROATED
WARBLER, 1 CERULEAN WARBLER, 4 WORM-EATING WARBLERS and 1 NORTHERN
WATERTHRUSH on April 26 (CR, RK).
Wildwood Nature Preserve in northern Harrisburg yielded 1 BALD EAGLE on
April 26 (SL).
FRANKLIN COUNTY:
A LEAST FLYCATCHER was found along Wilson Nature Trail on April 24 (BO).
HUNTINGDON COUNTY:
One LEAST FLYCATCHER, up to 5 YELLOW-THROATED WARBLERS, 1 CERULEAN
WARBLER and 4 WORM-EATING WARBLERS were found among the birds along the
Lower Trail between April 24 and 27 (MO, DK, TK, GG, AW, AA, NM, BOl).
Eight PURPLE FINCHES visited feeders in Huntingdon on April 25 and 27
(DK, TK).
Lake Perez produced 2 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 1 SOLITARY SANDPIPER and 3
SPOTTED SANDPIPERS on April 25 (JV).
A BALD EAGLE was seen at Raystown Dam on April 27 (AW, AA, NM, BOl).
Old Crow Wetlands produced 1 SORA, 3 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 2 SOLITARY
SANDPIPERS and 5 WILSON'S SNIPE on April 29 (AW).
LANCASTER COUNTY:
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, PURPLE FINCH and PINE SISKINS continue to visit
Holtwood feeders through April 28 (JSm).
LEBANON COUNTY:
Second Mountain Hawk Watch reported counting 15 OSPREY, 1 BALD EAGLE, 1
NORTHERN HARRIER, 68 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 8 COOPER'S HAWKS, 163
BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 9 RED-TAILED HAWKS and 16 AMERICAN KESTRELS between
April 26 and 27 (MC, DS).
WHITE-WINGED SCOTTERS were seen at Memorial Lake in Fort Indiantown Gap
on April 27 (AS, GK).
PERRY COUNTY:
A ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK visited feeders in New Bloomfield on April 28
and 29 (SA).
LUZERNE COUNTY:
A GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 2 LEAST FLYCATCHERS and 2 RED-BREASTED GROSBEAKS
were among the 64 species of birds seen at Kirby Park on April 27 (SG).
SCHUYKILL/BERKS COUNTIES:
Hawk Mountain Hawk Watch reported counting 4 TURKEY VULTURES, 8 OSPREY,
2 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 21 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 5 COOPER'S HAWKS, 1
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 251 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 3 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 3
AMERICAN KESTRELS and 1 MERLIN between April 24 and 28 (LG).
SUSQUEHANNA COUNTY:
ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS had made is all the way north to Milk Can
Corners by April 29 (HF).
TIOGA COUNTY:
The BALD EAGLE nest at Hammond Lake had 2 eaglets in it on April 28
(JHo).
YORK COUNTY:
A YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT HERON was seen on April 25 at a pond in Newberry
Township (JM).
A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER visited a suet feeder in the city of York on
April 27 (AP).
A pair of SANDHILL CRANES was observed flying northeast over Sam Lewis
State Park on April 28 (DC).
