Welcome to Pennsylvania Audubon's and the Patriot-News' Birdline. This Birdline
covers sightings made primarily during the week prior to Thursday, January 28,
2010.
CENTRE COUNTY:
A winter raptor survey run on January 23 in the Tusseyville and Centre Hall
areas counted 1 COOPER'S HAWK, 17 RED-TAILED HAWKS and 4 AMERICAN KESTRELS (RFu,
AFu, TFu, NB).
COLUMBIA COUNTY:
Two HERMIT THRUSHES were seen in a Greenwood Township backyard on January 21
(DGr).
CUMBERLAND COUNTY:
A winter raptor survey run on January 21 near Shippensburg located 34 TURKEY
VULTURES, 21 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 2 AMERICAN KESTRELS and 1 MERLIN (VG).
The PRAIRIE FALCON continues to be seen through January 24 along Mud Level Road
between the Duncan and Britton Road intersections (RS, AM).
A COMMON LOON and 1 MERLIN were at the Boiling Springs on January 24 (MK).
DAUPHIN COUNTY:
A winter raptor survey conducted on January 23 in northern Dauphin County
yielded 3 TURKEY VULTURES, 2 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 51 RED-TAILED HAWKS and 10
AMERICAN KESTRELS (RK, JR).
FRANKLIN COUNTY:
A winter raptor survey run on January 21 south of Route 16, east of the
Tuscarora Mountains and west of Williamsport Pike found 16 RED-TAILED HAWKS and
4 AMERICAN KESTRELS (DG. CG).
HUNTINGDON COUNTY:
A winter raptor survey conducted on January 23 located 4 TURKEY VULTURES, 1
COOPER'S HAWK, 19 RED-TAILED HAWKS and 1 AMERICAN KESTREL (RF, PF).
JUNIATA COUNTY:
A winter raptor survey run on January 21 in the western end of Juniata County
located 14 BLACK VULTURES, 42 TURKEY VULTURES, 1 BALD EAGLE, 2 NORTHERN
HARRIERS, 1 SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, 1 COOPER'S HAWK, 78 RED-TAILED HAWKS and 24
AMERICAN KESTRELS (CK, AT, RK).
LANCASTER COUNTY:
The GREAT EGRET was seen on January 20 along Stauffer Run just off William Penn
Way and Greenfield Road at the Greenfield Corporate Center (DB, JB).
A flock of 37 BRANT were seen along the Susquehanna River near Peach Bottom
Village on January 22 (BS). They were not seen on January 23 (BS). There was a
first year LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL at this location on January 24 (BS). An
adult GOLDEN EAGLE flew over Peach Bottom Village on January 27 (BS).
There were 3 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE and 1 PALM WARBLER at Middle Creek
Wildlife Management Area on January 24 (AG, DEb, AEb). Thousands of SNOW GEESE
and 1 BALD EAGLE are at Middle Creek as of January 27 (AH).
A third cycle LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen on January 24 with other gulls
in a field south of Washington Boro (DB, JB). Another LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL
was roosting n Conejohela Flats on January 24 (DB, JB).
LEBANON COUNTY:
The SANDHILL CRANE continues to be seen through January 27 at Lake Duffy in
State Game Lands 145 (RM, SH, AG, DEb, AEb, PB).
The GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE continued to be seen through January 22 among a
flock of 60 CANADA GEESE at Memorial Lake in Fort Indiantown Gap (DW, PW). The
GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was not seen on January 23 (RM). Two adult and one
immature BALD EAGLES were observed at Memorial Lake on January 25 (MC).
LUZERNE COUNTY:
A winter raptor survey run on January 23 in Black Creek and Sugar Loaf Townships
found 5 RED-TAILED HAWKS and 2 AMERICAN KESTRELS (PK).
There was 1 PEREGRINE FALCON at Kirby Park on January 24 (SG).
SNYDER COUNTY:
A winter raptor survey conducted on January 24 found 1 COOPER'S HAWK, 30
RED-TAILED HAWKS and 14 AMERICAN KESTRELS (CK, GG).
YORK COUNTY:
The PEREGRINE FALCON was seen on January 20 perched on the Judicial Center on
George Street in the city of York (AE).
A winter raptor survey run on January 23 in the southeastern part of the county
located 45 BLACK VULTURES, 57 TURKEY VULTURES, 3 BALD EAGLES, 9 RED-TAILED HAWKS
and 3 AMERICAN KESTRELS (DC, KC).
A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was observed on January 23 flying over I-83 about 0.5
miles north of the Newberrytown Exit #32 toward a woodlot on the south side of
the State Police Truck Weighing Station rest area (LC).
