Welcome to Pennsylvania Audubon's and the Patriot-News' Birdline. This Birdline
covers sightings made primarily during the week prior to Thursday, February 4,
2010.
ADAMS COUNTY:
A winter raptor survey run on January 27 located 2 BLACK VULTURES, 7 TURKEY
VULTURES, 1 NORTHERN HARRIER, 1 COOPER'S HAWK, 22 RED-TAILED HAWKS and 6
AMERICAN KESTRELS along with 1 RED-HEADED WOODPECKER (DS, RS, NL).
A winter raptor survey run on February 1 in the northern part of the county
found 86 BLACK VULTURES, 48 TURKEY VULTURES, 1 NORTHERN HARRIER, 1 SHARP-SHINNED
HAWKS, 2 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, 23 RED-TAILED HAWKS and 6 AMERICAN KESTRELS
(RFr, PFr, KGi, DGi).
CARBON COUNTY:
A RED-NECKED GREBE was seen on January 28 at the boat launch at Beltzville State
Park (DH).
CENTRE COUNTY:
A NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL called at Bear Meadows on the evening of January 29
(JD).
A BALD EAGLE was observed at Bald Eagle State Park on January 30 (BSn).
A winter raptor survey run along Centre Route 2 on January 31 located 5 BLACK
VULTURES, 45 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 2 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS and 2 AMERICAN KESTRELS (JL,
RF, NB, NS).
CLEARFIELD COUNTY:
A winter raptor survey conducted on January 31 located 6 RED-TAILED HAWKS and 1
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK (DBi, DGr).
CUMBERLAND COUNTY:
A LEAST SANDPIPER continues to be seen at the Big Spring through at least
January 30 (VG).
The PRAIRIE FALCON continues to be seen through January 30 along Mud Level Road
between the Duncan and Britton Road intersections (MW).
A BALD EAGLE was observed flying over Letort Spring Run in Middlesex Township on
January 31 (HW).
There was 1 RED-HEADED WOODPECKER along Wagners Lane in West Pennsboro Township
on February 2 (HW, KW).
There were 3 LAPLAND LONGSPURS in with a flock of 150 HORNED LARKS along Running
Pump Road (AL).
FRANKLIN COUNTY:
A winter raptor survey run on January 29 counted 1 NORTHERN HARRIER, 1
SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, 20 RED-TAILED HAWKS and 0 AMERICAN KESTRELS (DG, RSh, KL,
DL).
A winter raptor survey run on January 31 from Concord to Fannettsburg east to
Letterkenny located 1 NORTHERN HARRIER, 1 COOPER'S HAWK, 7 RED-TAILED HAWKS and
4 AMERICAN KESTRELS (CLe, JLe).
A winter raptor survey conducted on February 2 in the southeastern part of the
county recorded 2 TURKEY VULTURES, 2 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, 24 RED-TAILED HAWKS
and 4 AMERICAN KESTRELS (RFr, PFr).
There were 9 EURASIAN COLLARED DOVES in Shady Grove on February 2 (RFr, PFr).
HUNTINGDON COUNTY:
A winter raptor survey run on January 28 found 6 BALD EAGLES, 14 RED-TAILED
HAWKS and 6 AMERICAN KESTRELS (TK, DK).
A winter raptor survey run on January 30 in the northern part of the county
counted 7 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 1 AMERICAN KESTREL and 1 NORTHERN SHRIKE (along
Furnace Farm Lane) (DBi, NEK).
JUNIATA COUNTY:
A BALD EAGLE was seen on January 30 at the Juniata Narrows along the end of Arch
Rock Road (JD, SL).
A MERLIN was found on January 30 along Freed Road near Van Wert (JD, SL).
LANCASTER COUNTY:
There was a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK perched in tree east of Wissler Road and north of
Linden Grove Road on January 28 (AH). The ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK continued to be seen
in this area through January 29 (AL). It was seen on January 30 perched in
trees south of Linden Grove Road near the intersection of Wissler and Voganville
Road (DB).
Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area produced 3193 SNOW GEESE and 500 TUNDRA
SWANS along with other waterfowl on January 28 (PF). The numbers of waterfowl
dropped on January 29 (The lake was frozen over) to 250 SNOW GEESE, 1 CACKLING
GOOSE and 1 BALD EAGLE (AL).
A winter raptor survey run on January 30 found 2 BALD EAGLES, 28 RED-TAILED
HAWKS and 3 AMERICAN KESTRELS (FH, BH).
A LAPLAND LONGSPUR was found on February 3 in a flock of 100 HORNED LARKS on the
east side of School Land Road in Salisbury Township (PF).
One ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER and 2 PALM WARBLERS were seen on February 3 at the
Lancaster Area Sewer Authority's Susquehanna Water Pollution Control Plant off
of Blue Rock Road in Washington Boro (JB, DB).
LEBANON COUNTY:
The SANDHILL CRANE continues to be seen through February 1 at Lake Duffy in
State Game Lands 145 (RM).
A winter raptor survey run on January 30 located 2 BLACK VULTURES, 8 TURKEY
VULTURES, 1 BALD EAGLE, 1 SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, 1 COOPER'S HAWK, 30 RED-TAILED
HAWKS and 5 AMERICAN KESTRELS (GB, RL, FH, AS).
LYCOMING COUNTY:
A winter raptor survey run in the southern part of the county on January 31
found 9 BLACK VULTURES, 1 TURKEY VULTURE, 41 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 2 ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWKS, 8 AMERICAN KESTRELS and 1 MERLIN (JY, ML).
MCKEAN COUNTY:
A winter raptor survey conducted on January 31 counted 1 RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 21
RED-TAILED HAWKS and 1 AMERICAN KESTREL (JF).
SUSQUEHANNA COUNTY:
A winter raptor survey run in rural Springville Township found 2 NORTHERN
HARRIERS, 4 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 3 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, 2 AMERICAN KESTRELS and 3
SHORT-EARED OWLS (JS, JC).
YORK COUNTY:
Two RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were found in Codorus State Park on January 28 (AP).
The PEREGRINE FALCON continues to be seen perched on the Judicial Center or
Trinity Church in the city of York through February 1 (AE).
