Welcome to Pennsylvania Audubon's and the Patriot-News' Birdline. This Birdline
covers sightings made primarily during the week prior to Thursday, February 25,
2010.
ADAMS COUNTY:
A dark morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was observed on February 19 at Gettysburg
National Battlefield Park (BM).
There were 57 TUNDRA SWANS in the fields east of Germany Road and on the north
side of Possum Hollow Road on February 21 (PK).
FRANKLIN COUNTY:
One PINE SISKIN visited feeders in Fayetteville on February 22 and 23 (VB).
JUNIATA COUNTY:
One RED-HEADED WOODPECKER continues to be seen along Lost Creek Road through at
least February 21 (JL).
An immature BALD EAGLE was observed on February 20 as it flew over Cedar Springs
Road near its intersection with Zendt Hollow Road (JL).
HUNTINGDON COUNTY:
An adult BALD EAGLE was perched on a tree below the Raystown Dam on February 20
(JD).
LANCASTER COUNTY:
Four AMERICAN PIPITS were seen along Meadow Creek Road on February 18 (AP).
A winter raptor survey run on February 20 counted 5 BLACK VULTURES. 165 TURKEY
VULTURES, 1 BALD EAGLE, 1 NORTHERN HARRIER and 40 RED-TAILED HAWKS (BS, TA, LE).
Middle Creek Wildlife Propagation Area produced 3000 SNOW GEESE in the fields
and 780 TUNDRA SWANS on the lake on February 20 (ME, DB, JB).
Two PEREGRINE FALCONS were seen perched on the Route 462 bridge over the
Susquehanna River on February 20 (ML).
An immature BALD EAGLE was observed in the Susquehanna River from Long Level on
February 20 (ML).
Two PEREGRINE FALCONS were spotted on February 20 perched on the Marriott Hotel
in downtown Lancaster (ML). They were also seen on February 22 (ML).
A winter raptor survey run on February 21 in the southwestern section of the
county located 85 BLACK VULTURES, 133 TURKEY VULTURES, 11 BALD EAGLES, 27
RED-TAILED HAWKS and 1 AMERICAN KESTREL (BS, LE).
A pair of BALD EAGLES were seen along Espenshade Road east of Strasburg on
February 21 (TR).
An early flock of 6 TREE SWALLOWS was observed flying upstream on February 22
(DW).
The overwintering GREAT EGRET was again spotted on February 24 along Stauffer
Run near the intersection of Jarvis and Willow Roads (JB, DB).
LEBANON COUNTY:
Second Mountain Hawk Watch reported counting 26 BLACK VULTURES, 49 TURKEY
VULTURES, 4 RED-TAILED HAWKS and 1 GOLDEN EAGLE between February 20 and 22 (MC).
A probable SNOWY OWL was spotted between Annville and Palmyra on February 22
(RL, KL). It was near the quarry west of Clear Spring Road and south of Syner
Road and was flying over fields from US 422 toward the buildings at the quarry
loading zone (RL, KL).
The SANDHILL CRANE was NOT observed at Lake Duffy in State Game Lands 145 this
week (RM).
MIFFLIN COUNTY:
Two adult BALD EAGLES were seen on February 20 flying over the Juniata River
near the Route 103 Bridge (CK).
YORK COUNTY:
An adult BALD EAGLE flew over a city of York yard on February 20 (AP).
An adult BALD EAGLE was photographed perched on a telephone pole along Route 462
in east York on February 20 (DJ).
A PEREGRINE FALCON continues to be observed perched on the Judicial Center on
George Street in York through at least February 20 (ML). Two PEREGRINE FALCONS
were present in this area on February 22 (AE).
There were two BALD EAGLES where Mill Creek enters Codorus State Park close to
the intersection of US Route 30 and Loucks Mill Road (AE).
