Welcome to Pennsylvania Audubon's and the Patriot-News' Birdline. This Birdline
covers sightings made primarily during the week prior to Thursday, July 29,
2010.
CENTRE COUNTY:
The immature LITTLE BLUE HERON continues to be seen at Colyer Lake through at
least July 22 along with 2 LEAST SANDPIPERS (MH, MHe, DW, CK). The LITTLE BLUE
HERON was not present on July 24, but a LESSER YELLOWLEGS was found (NB). Three
LEAST SANDPIPERS were seen on July 26 (MH).
A MARSH WREN was seen at Curtin Wetlands on July 26 and 27 (BSn, JD).
CUMBERLAND COUNTY:
An AMERICAN AVOCET was observed between July 22 and 25 at the Deerfield Commons
Retention Pond along Route 11 going into Shippensburg (VG, DS, DBi, BO, BK).
LANCASTER COUNTY:
Conejohela Flats produced up to 2 immature LITTLE BLUE HERONS, 10 BALD EAGLES, 2
SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 4 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 13 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 3
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS 140 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 2 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 1
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER and 2 CASPIAN TERNS between July 23 an 28 (JB, DB, BS,
BC, ME). An AMERICAN AVOCET also was observed on the Flats on July 25 (BC, BS,
JB, DB).
A pair of PEREGRINE FALCONS were seen near the Route 462 Bridge over the
Susquehanna River on July 24 (ML).
There were 3 LESSER YELLOWLEGS and 16 LEAST SANDPIPERS at Woods Edge Park on
July 25 (BC).
Nine LAUGHING GULLS were seen on July 25 in the Susquehanna River near Peach
Bottom Atomic Power Station (BS).
Three UPLAND SANDPIPERS, 3 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS and the previously reported
DICKCISSEL were seen on July 27 near the intersection of Smyna and Williams Run
road (JL, AH). The UPLAND SANDPIPERS were in an alfalfa field east of the
intersection and down Williams Road close to the next intersection (JL).
There were 7 CASPIAN TERNS, 1 ALDER FLYCATCHER and 1 BLUE GROSSBEAK at Middle
Creek Wildlife Management Area on July 27 (BC).
A BALD EAGLE was seen along Buck Run Road on July 27 (AH).
LEBANON COUNTY:
The CHUCK-WILL'S-WIDOW continues to be heard calling through July 25 along
Tomstown Road near Fort Indiantown Gap (TB, JB, DB, KA).
The mostly dry ponds at Restville produced 9 LEAST SANDPIPERS on July 26 (RM).
LUZERNE COUNTY:
There were 18 LEAST SANDPIPERS 1 PECTORAL SANDPIPER and 2 FORSTER'S TERNS along
the Susquehanna River on July 25 (KR).
Two COMMON LOONS were at Harvey's Lake on July 25 (KR).
Forty Fort produced 1 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER and 40 LEAST SANDPIPERS on July 25
(KR).
There was 1 PEREGRINE FALCON at Kirby Park on July 25 (SG).
