Welcome to Pennsylvania Audubon's and the Patriot-News' Birdline. This Birdline
covers sightings made primarily during the week prior to Thursday, August 19,
2010.
ADAMS COUNTY:
The pond off of Gun Club Road produced 1 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER and 30 LEAST
SANDPIPERS on August 14 (PK).
BLAIR/SOMERSET COUNTIES:
Allegheny Front Hawk Watch reported tabulating 3 OSPREY, 1 BALD EAGLE, 5
SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 4 COOPER'S HAWKS, 53 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 5 RED-TAILED HAWKS
AND 1 AMERICAN KESTREL between August 15 and 18 (BSt, JR, BG, TB, RMc).
CENTRE COUNTY:
Colyer Lake yielded up to 1 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 1 LESSER YELLOWLEGS and 2 LEAST
SANDPIPER between August 13 and 16 (MH).
There was up to 1 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 7 LESSER YELLOWLEGS and 12 LEAST
SANDPIPERS at Julian Wetlands between August 14 and 17 (NB, DGu, JV).
A SEMIPALMATED PLOVER was observed at Bald Eagle State Park on August 15 (BSn).
An adult BALD EAGLE and 1 MERLIN were seen at Toftrees on August 17 (NK, CG).
One GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER was seen on August 18 at Scotia Barrens (GG).
CUMBERLAND COUNTY:
Waggoner's Gap Hawk Watch reported counting 7 OSPREY, 13 BALD EAGLES, 2 NORTHERN
HARRIERS, 6 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 1 COOPER'S HAWK, 1 RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 12
BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 8 RED-TAILED HAWKS and 10 AMERICAN KESTRELS between August
12 and 18 (DG, RF, CH).
DAUPHIN COUNTY:
A male BLUE GROSBEAK was singing along Canal Road in south Hanover Township on
August 16 (DWi, PWi).
FRANKLIN COUNTY:
A BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING DUCK was observed on August 14 standing in tall grass
under a Weeping Willow at 2341 Falling Spring Road in Chambersburg (RMa). It was
not present on August 15 (VG).
LANCASTER COUNTY:
Conejohela Flats produced up to 1 juvenile LITTLE BLUE HERON, 2 GLOSSY IBISES,
12 BALD EAGLES, 1 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 5 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 2 GREATER
YELLOWLEGS, 23 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 30 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 110 LEAST
SANDPIPERS, 1 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 4 PECTORAL SANDPIPER, 4 SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHERS, 1 WILSON'S PHALAROPE, 1 GULL-BILLED TERN, 4 CASPIAN TERNS, 35
FORSTER'S TERNS and 1 BLACK TERN between August 13 and 18 (BC, JB, DB, ME, DH).
There were 2 PEREGRINE FALCONS at the Route 462 bridge over the Susquehanna
River at Wrightsville on August 3 (BC).
A MOURNING WARBLER was seen on August 14 just off the parking area in State Game
Lands 156 (BC).
There was 1 SNOWY EGRET and 1 LITTLE BLUE HERON in the Susquehanna River near
the Fallmouth Boat Access on August 18 (ME).
LANCASTER/LEBANON COUNTIES.
Four LESSER YELLOWLEGS and 5 BLUE GROSBEAKS were found on August 16 at Middle
Creek Wildlife Propagation Area (BC, RM).
LEBANON COUNTY:
Second Mountain Hawk Watch reported counting 2 OSPREY, 3 BALD EAGLES, 1 NORTHERN
HARRIER, 2 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 4 COOPER'S HAWKS, 11 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 9
RED-TAILED HAWKS, 1 AMERICAN KESTREL and 2 MERLINS between August 12 and 17 (MC,
DS, RP).
An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was seen on August 13 off Pinch Road and along Gen.
Biddle Road in State Game Lands 145 (RM, JC).
There was 1 EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE near the intersection of Route 322 and Valley
Lane on August 17 (BC).
LUZERNE COUNTY:
There were 4 BALD EAGLES, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, LEAST SANDPIPER and 1 SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHER at Forty Fort on August 18 (KR).
A SEMIPALMATED PLOVER was observed at Plymouth Flats on August 18 (KR).
PERRY COUNTIES:
A juvenile WHITE IBIS was seen between August 14 and 17 along the Juniata River
above the Millerstown Bridge (TP, CK, DWi, PWi, DH, AT, DC).
SCHUYKILL/BERKS COUNTIES:
Hawk Mountain Hawk Watch reported counting 2 OSPREY, 6 BALD EAGLES, 1 NORTHERN
HARRIER, 1 SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, 3 COOPER'S HAWKS, 1 RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 4
BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 4 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 8 AMERICAN KESTRELS and 2 MERLINS
between August 15 and 18 (LG).
YORK COUNTY:
The previously reported 3 SNOWY EGRETS continued to be seen through August 16 at
the Conowago Boat Launch at Brunner Island (LC, DC). A WILLET was seen on
August 17 at the Conowago Boat Launch (SD).
There was 1 SNOWY EGRET at Lake Redman on August 14 (AP).
