AMERICAN WOODCOCKS are being seen in pretty good numbers right now,
possibly better than average for this time due to the pretty wintry
conditions until very recently. Six were seen at SGL-286 on 3/19, and
up to 8 were at Drehersville on 3/19-20. Hawk Mountain's Acopian Center
also had an AMERICAN WOODCOCK on 3/20, and one was at the Owl Creek area
on 3/21.
Some birds from the Lewistown Valley on 3/20 were 2 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 2
AMERICAN KESTRELS, 4 BLACK VULTURES, HOODED MERGANSER, FOX SPARROW, 3
BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS, 20 WILD TURKEYS, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, and
1000's of blackbirds. Other recent sightings were DARK-EYED JUNCOS,
EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, HAIRY WOODPECKERS, BROWN CREEPER, TURKEY VULTURES,
RED-TAILED HAWKS, PILEATED WOODPECKER, and KILLDEER.
The Hidden Valley area held flock of WILD TURKEYS, 3 RED-BELLIED
WOODPECKERS, PILEATED WOODPECKER, many AMERICAN ROBINS, SONG SPARROWS,
DARK-EYED JUNCOS, DOWNY WOODPECKER, and many RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS,
BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS, and COMMON GRACKLES.
Our first OSPREY of the year was seen at the Sweet Arrow Lake on 3/17.
A male COMMON GOLDENEYE was here on 3/19. The 10th had 2 COMMON
MERGANSERS, 10 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 6 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 10 NORTHERN
PINTAILS, 6 WOOD DUCKS, WINTER WREN, COOPER'S HAWK, NORTHERN FLICKER,
GREAT BLUE HERON, AMERICAN KESTRELS, 3 WILD TURKEYS, FOX SPARROW, and a
few TREE SPARROWS. The fields just east of the lake had over 10,000
blackbirds as well as at least 50 BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS.
Six COMMON MERGANSERS and 2 WILD TURKEYS were seen near the Tumbling Run
area on 3/20. A possible SNOWY OWL was seen at a field area toward the
north end of Tumbling Run road.
A COMMON SNIPE was at the Landingville Dam on 3/17. Other birds from
this location were 95 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 58 COMMON MERGANSERS, 12 HOODED
MERGANSERS, 11 WOOD DUCKS, 4 AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS, EASTERN PHOEBE, and 7
BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS. A HORNED GREBE was here on 3/21.
A BROWN CREEPER was singing at the Owl Creek area on 3/21. Other birds
here were EASTERN PHOEBE, PILEATED WOODPECKER, 2 RED-BREASTED
NUTHATCHES, and a KILLDEER.
On 3/21, a NORTHERN HARRIER was seen at Pitman along with HORNED LARKS,
AMERICAN KESTREL, EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, and PILEATED WOODPECKER.
Enjoy your birding.
