Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for February  
22nd, 2008.  This report covers the period  from February 15th to  February
21st,
 and will be updated again on February 28th.
 
A BLACK-TAILED GULL was found at Watchemoket Cove in East Providence on the  
17th.  The bird was observed sitting on the rocks on the south side of the  
RIRI
the East Bay bike path, in flight, across the Providence River.   Subsequent 
searches failed to produce the gull again.  Up to 4 BLACK-HEADED  GULLS have 
been reported from Watchemoket Cove, and a EURASIAN WIGEON was seen  in a cove 
along the bike path about a quarter of a mile from Watchemoket.
 
At Bold Point Park in East Providence, a HOARY REDPOLL was reported with  
several COMMON REDPOLLS on the 19th.  The bird was seen in the birches and  on 
RIRI
was found again on the 20th and the 21st.  Each day the bird  was found for 
only a short time, and not more than one sighting was made each  day despite 
intense scrutiny.  A BALD EAGLE was found here on the 21st, and  an ICELAND GULL
was found roosting with other gulls on the 18th.
 
In Glocester, at Durfee Hill Management Area along Route 94, 1 PILEATED  
WOODPECKER was seen on the 21st, and on the 16th, a COMMON RAVEN was found
there.
 
On the 15th at Napatree Point in Westerly,  4 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 1  RUDDY 
TURNSTONE, 1 RED KNOT and 14 PURPLE SANDPIPERS.
 
At Trustom Pond NWR, the SANDHILL CRANE, 2 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, 1  SHORT-EARED 
OWL, 2 REDHEADS, and 1 EURASIAN WIGEON were reported this  week.
 
At Camp Cronin in Narraganset, the male KING EIDER continued into this  week, 
along with 2 HARLEQUIN DUCKS.   A GLAUCOUS GULL was found around  the fishing 
fleet in Galilee on the 16th. 
 
From the lighthouse parking lot at Point Judith on the 21st, 1 COMMON MURRE  
was observed.
 
On the 20th at Sachuest NWR Saltmarsh in Middletown 5 SNOW GEESE were  
reported, and another SNOW GOOSE was seen on the grounds of the Sullivan School 
 in
Newport.  At Sachuest Point NWR, the BARROW'S GOLDENEYE and 2  SHORT-EARED 
OWLS were reported again this week.
 
In Jamestown, at Beavertail State Park, 16 HARLEQUIN DUCKS,  25  BONAPARTE'S 
GULLS and 3 RAZORBILLS were recorded on the 16th.
 
At Perry Pond (Firehouse Pond) in Charlestown, 2 NORTHERN SHOVELERS and a  
GREATER YELLOWLEGS were spotted this week.
 
Six BLACK VULTURES were observed in Ashaway.
 
The male TUFTED DUCK  found at the East Providence Reservoir on the  January 
21st is still being reported. The bird is being seen in the northern  section 
of the James V. Turner (East Providence) Reservoir.  This section  is also 
called Central Pond.  The ducks are being viewed from the 10 Mile  River bike 
path, which runs between Slater Memorial Park in Pawtucket and  Kimberly Rock 
Park in East Providence.  Two PIED-BILLED GREBES, 1 BALD  EAGLE and 1 
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK were also spotted here this week.
 
Finally, RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS have been reported from amny areas of the  
state.
