Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for February
28th, 2008. This report covers the period from February 22nd to February
28th,
and will be updated again on March 7th.
At Bold Point in East Providence, 1 and possibly 2 HOARY REDPOLLS are being
seen every day with a small flock of COMMON REDPOLLS. Thanks to Greg
Sargent, who placed a thistle sock and some seed on the ground, the birds can
now be
readily found. The feeder is located in the brush, just to the east of the
yellow bar gate and the large cement blocks. With patience, good views can
be had of the birds on the ground, and in the birch trees there. In the
morning, the light is better from the hill overlooking the feeder. Please
avoid

2 HERMIT THRUSHES, 1 BLACK-HEADED GULL, 1 PEREGRINE FALCON and 11 SNOW
BUNTINGS. At Watchemoket Cove, 1 BLACK-HEADED GULL was present, and the
EURASIAN
WIGEON was observed on the 28th from the East Bay bike path. To see the
Wigeon, it is easiest to park at Boyden Heights Conservation Area, at the end
of
Boyden Blvd, which is opposite Bay View High School, walk to the bike path
and travel north, just beyond the Squantum Club.
On the 24th, 1 SNOW GOOSE was found with a flock of CANADA GEESE off the
right shoulder of the approach to the Newport Bridge on-ramp, just before the
Newport dog park. Another SNOW GOOSE was seen at Hammersmith Farm in Newport.
One BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was reported near Middlebridge in Narraganset
on the 26th. The KING EIDER was again observed this week at Camp Cronin
fishing access, just north of Point Judith.
Birds reported prior to this week which are still being seen include: at
Perry Pond (Firehouse Pond), Cross Mills, 2 NORTHERN SHOVELERS, at Ninigret NWR,
1 adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, at Trustom Pond NWR, 1 SANDHILL CRANE, 3
REDHEADS, 1 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and 1 LAPLAND LONGSPUR. At Galilee, 1 GLAUCOUS
GULL and at Sachuest Point NWR in Middletown, 2 SHORT-EARED OWLS and 1
BARROW'S GOLDENEYE.
Six EASTERN MEADOWLARKS were noted along Card's Pond Road on the 24th.
On the 28th, 2 COMMON RAVENS were seen flying over Route 295 in Cranston,
and another COMMON RAVEN was seen and heard calling over Keech Pond in
Chepachet.
On Block Island on the 24th: 1 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was found along
RIRI
the south end of the island, 3 BLUE-WINGED TEAL. One THICK-BILLED MURRE
was spotted from the ferry to the island on the 23rd, and 1 BLACK-LEGGED
KITTIWAKE was also observed.
At Lonsdale Marsh in Lincoln, 2 WOOD DUCKS and a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL
were reported on the 24th.
Finally, the male TUFTED DUCK found at the East Providence Reservoir on the
January 21st is still being reported. The bird is being seen in the northern
section of the James V. Turner (East Providence) Reservoir. This section is
also called Central Pond. The ducks are being viewed from the 10 Mile River
bike path, which runs between Slater Memorial Park in Pawtucket and Kimberly
Rock Park in East Providence.
That's all for this week, thank you for calling and good birding!
